The Milligan College Men’s Basketball team suffered an Appalachian Athletic Conference setback Saturday night with a final score of 71-64 against rival Virginia Intermont College.

The Buffaloes fell behind from the start, trailing 7-0 after less than two minutes of play. Freshman Jeff Barnes converted two free throws at 17:22 to get them on the scoreboard.

Milligan trailed the Cobras 34-32 at halftime.

The Buffaloes’s first lead came with 9:30 remaining when a three pointer from freshman Tino Washington put Milligan on top 60-59. Junior Adrian Harrison scored on an alley-oop pass from junior Zach Dezarn to push the Buffaloes. However, the Cobras would outscore the Buffaloes 12-2 the rest of the way for the victory.

“This one hurts because we were in the ballgame but just didn’t take of the ball like we needed to down the stretch,” said Harrison.

The Buffaloes shot decently well from behind the arc, nailing 9 of 27 three pointers but only 24 of 70 from the field. The Cobras were impressive, however, hitting 7 of 14 from behind the three point line and 27 of 49 from the floor.

Milligan was led by junior Tony Brogan with 14 points. Barnes recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Milligan also collected 21 offensive rebounds in out-rebounding Virginia Intermont 39-31.

The Cobras were led by Patrick Glenn with 19 points.

The 6-foot-6- inch senior post from Charlotte, N.C., poured in 20 points, snatched 15 rebounds and blocked nine shots, falling just one rejection short of a triple-double.

With Bluefield leading 38-36 heading into halftime, the game looked as if it were going to be decided in the final minutes. However, a half of hot shooting – 50 percent – for Bluefield was enough to ice the Buffs and secure the victory.

Cedric Brown’s efforts, along with fellow senior post player Ben Smalls, who scored 25 on the night, propelled the Rams to a convincing 90-71 victory over the struggling Buffs.

Leading the way for Milligan was junior Zach Dezarn, who scored 18 points.

The loss drops Milligan to 9-13 overall and just 3-11 in the AAC. It is the sixth consecutive game in which the Buffs have finished on the short end of the scoreboard.

Bluefield improves to 16-11 overall and 10-5 in the AAC.
