Milligan’s chapter of the national history honor society Phi Alpha Theta inducted six new members Jan. 27.

The new members are seniors Lisa Brandon, Justin Stauffer and Andy McNeely and juniors Josh Ferry, Luke Rogers and Jon Toler

“I love history,” said McNeely, a Bible major, “and look forward to the trips.” He admits joining Phi Alpha Theta so that his parents would be proud of him.

Senior Jessica Schiwitz, president of Phi Alpha Theta, was pleased with the group of inductees, which nearly doubled the size of the chapter and added male students to the group. She looks forward to adding to the number of active members in the chapter.

“We had a busy fall schedule,” said Schiwitz, “and I hope to continue history-oriented activities in the new semester.”

With the new additions, the group has 14 student members currently at Milligan, according to faculty adviser Dr. Ted Thomas.

Milligan’s chapter of Phi Alpha Theta is Iota Alpha Tau. It was founded in 2001 and its membership is 37 students and six faculty members, said Thomas.

The campus chapter joins the society’s mission “to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians,” as stated by the society’s Web site.

In order to be eligible to join Phi Alpha Theta, a student must complete 12 hours of history classes, maintaining a GPA in history courses of at least 3.1. His or her overall GPA must be at least 3.0. All students meeting these criteria can join, regardless of their majors.
