The Milligan College Lady Buffs softball team had a disappointing Sunday afternoon at the Appalachian State University round-robin day tournament, losing to Appalachian State 1-3 and Young Harris College (Ga.) 3-11.

“[The team] should have pulled together and played as a team, but we just fell apart,” said freshman center fielder Cassidy Sigars. “Instead of rallying, we just quit.”

In the first game of the day against Appy State, sophomore second baseman Sarah Smith was the only Lady Buff to score a run.

Milligan was next scheduled to battle against East Tennessee State University, but the game was cancelled due to a lack of time and the unplayable condition, as a result of rain, of the other field that games were scheduled to be played on. For the final game of the day, the Lady Buffs were up against Young Harris, the 2004 National Junior College Athletic Association Region XVII Champions. Smith, Sigars and freshman shortstop Heather Poindextar scored Milligan’s three runs.

“Our batting needs to be more consistent,” said senior first baseman Brooke Davis. “If we each start pulling our own weight in hitting, then the runs will come.”

The Lady Buffs have a busy schedule during fall break as they take on Lees-McRae College on Thursday and University of Tennessee, Tennessee Tech and Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday.

“We are excited for the challenge [of playing UT], and we know that it will make us a better team,” said Davis.
