The Milligan women’s soccer team traveled almost eight hours to Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio this past weekend, only to return home with a 2-1 loss.

“I thought that the team played fairly well. It wasn't one of our best performances, but we played well enough to win,” said head coach David Dixon. “We made two bad mistakes, and we were punished for them.”

Junior Katie Lindemann thought the weather had some effect on the team. “The weather conditions were horrible; it was cold and rainy,” she said and also noted that the seven hour drive to Ohio and the night in a hotel complicated play.

Dixon noted that the weather conditions were not great but he thought “they didn't affect the team and the way that we wanted to play.”

Lindemann said the team did not come out as strong as it normally does in the beginning of a game.

The Lady Buffs trailed 2-0 at halftime and finally scored with one minute left in the game. Lindemann scored off a rebound from a shot made by senior Cora Deakins.

Despite the slow start, Lindemann said that the team started picking up play action at the end of the game, but there was not enough time left to make up the difference.

Senior Kim Morris said the team did not play as well as it has been playing.

“We didn’t play as well as we could have,” said Morris. “It was a rough game.”

When asked about what they have been focusing on at practice, Dixon said “we have been working on our attacking shape and runs in the box.”

The Lady Buffs are preparing to host fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference team Bryan College on Wednesday at 7 p.m

“The Bryan game is big. It is a conference game and a must win for us,” said Dixon.

With the loss against Mount Vernon Nazarene, the Lady Buffs have an overall season record of 5-5-1.

The Milligan men excelled on the field, winning 4-0 against Spaulding University (Ky.) on Saturday.

Sophomore Caleb Bollman and freshman Sam Belmar each contributed a goal, with senior captain Steven Townley put in two goals.

The win brings Milligan’s record to 6-5 for the season and 2-1 in the AAC conference. The team next heads to Tennessee Wesleyan College on Saturday.
