You win some, you lose some. Or in the case of the Milligan men’s soccer team, you win some. The Buffs continued their winning streak last weekend, capturing their fourth and fifth consecutive wins by defeating Bethel College, 2-1, and shutting out Cumberland University, 3-0.

In the first game of the homecoming weekend on Friday night, the Buffs competed against the Bethel Wildcats. Bethel grabbed the lead early on when Javier Figueroa scored the first goal in the seventh minute. The Buffs battled back and senior captain Steven Townley tied the score in the 28th minute.

The game remained tied for the rest of regulation play. It wasn’t until the second overtime period, when Townley scored the winning goal, that Milligan was able to breathe easy.

The Buffs headed back to the field Saturday night against Cumberland. The first half remained uneventful, except for one yellow card given to Milligan.

The second half brought on more action as Milligan finally broke through Cumberland’s defense to score. Senior Ali Mohamed scored the first goal, unassisted, in the 54th minute. Milligan scored again when junior Stuart Mackinson made a goal in the 63rd minute off of an assist from senior Alex Kimani.

The action and pace picked up on the field as Cumberland struggled to get back into the game. Two more yellow cards were thrown by the officials, one to Milligan and one to Cumberland, as well as one red card given to Cumberland. As the coaches, players and officials battled, Mohamed ran through Cumberland’s defensive line and scored again without an assist, with only 33 seconds remaining, to bring the final score to 3-0.

The wins bring Milligan’s record to 11-5-1 for the season and 4-1-1 in the AAC. The Buffs have only one match left before the conference tournament begins. They will go up against conference foe Covenant College (Ga.), currently ranked No. 1 in the conference, on Tuesday.
