The alumni defeated the short-handed students 44-18 in the annual student vs. alumni flag football game Saturday morning during Homecoming weekend.
“The students have given it a valid effort, but once again the alumni dominated,” said President of the Alumni Association Bob Hayden after the game. “This is what some alumni live for.” According to Hayden, the alumni team has won at least the last five football games.
Damond Davis, alumnus from the class of 2000, said that he always looks forward to the football game because it’s a great opportunity to interact with and meet current students and find out what is going on at Milligan.
“It’s always good to come back,” Davis said. “It would have been nice, though, to see more student participation.” The students played with only seven players throughout the game, compared to the full eight for the alumni, in addition to three substitutes.
Davis had an outstanding game, throwing three touchdown passes and scoring almost a 60-yard touchdown return after receiving a lateral from his teammate, which followed an interception to close out the first half. The alumni led 22-0 at halftime.
The alumni enjoy the homecoming football game so much that some players begged the time keeper to add more time to the second-half clock,, wanting 40 minutes of playtime rather than the standard 25.
“It was fun being on the other side,” said class of 2004 graduate T.W. Davis. He said the alumni take the game a lot less serious and just try to have a good time.
Senior Justin Carson made several tackles inside the red zone for the student team, including a diving tackle into the mud around the 5-yard line on fourth down. The tackle was during the opening drive and turned out to be the only drive in which the alumni did not score. Senior Nathan Thomas had two touchdown passes and also ran in for a touchdown.
The students fought hard during the second half, scoring three touchdowns but were unable to convert on any of their three point conversion tries.
The alumni offense was too much for the short-handed students as the alumni answered after every student score in the second half with a touchdown of their own, taking the victory.
