With paint brushes, acrylic paint and canvas in hand, students gathered in SUB 7 on Tuesday night to enjoy a time of relaxation and fellowship. About 40 students joined in on the fun as the arts council asked students to just bring themselves and a canvas. $250 worth of paint, brushes and pallets were provided for everyone to use.
“I first thought there would only be people I know who showed up, like eight people,” said junior Stephanie Dalton, Arts Council president. “It’s so fun that there are so many people, so many different people here.”
Students sat on the floor, gathered around tables and filled the stage with colorful canvases depicting sunsets, flowers and abstract ideas.
Junior Andy Ross stood up from his seat on the floor, leaving his blue mountains to finish drying, to hear those gathered around praise him for his talent.
“I love it,” said Ross about the night of painting that was offered for students.
He walked around to the other artists scattered about the room, commenting on people’s work.
“I love it even though I’m a really bad painter,” said sophomore Steven Anliker who said he didn’t know what he was painting when asked what he was creating on his canvas. “It’s still a lot of fun,” he said.
Dalton said the idea for the night of painting came from her own experiences. She said that she and her friends would paint to just relax and have a good time. When the time came to plan events, Dalton said she thought of how arts council could get more students involved in art.
She said the Arts Council is planning on having a night to celebrate the arts next semester.
The night would allow students who have talent singing, acting or dancing to be on stage.
“The Milligan community could come and dress up and just have fun,” Dalton said.
