The Milligan College women’s soccer team split their last two games, defeating Tennessee Wesleyan University (2-1) on Saturday, but were shut out by Covenant College (Ga.) (0-2) Tuesday night.
“The match up last Saturday was expected to be a tough game,” said head coach Dave Dixon. “I was very pleased with how the team performed.”
On Saturday, both teams remained scoreless until Tennessee Wesleyan put in the first goal during the 40th minute, giving a halftime score of 0-1.
The Lady Buffs came back from the break determined to win as junior Katie Caughell scored Milligan’s first goal only two minutes into the half off an assist from sophomore Kristin Zutt. Both teams struggled against each other to take control throughout the rest of the second half. Caughell captured the win for Milligan with only five minutes left in play off another assist from Zutt.
“This is the first time this season where we came from behind to win the game,” said Dixon. “(The Lady Buffs) played hard and well the whole game against a very physical team. We are starting to get some injured players back, and it is going to make a huge difference.”
On Tuesday night, the Lady Buffs were defeated by number 15 ranked Covenant 0-2. Despite out-shooting Covenant 6 to 4 in the game, Milligan were not able to respond to the two goals made in the first half by the Lady Scots.
Milligan’s record now stands at 7-6-1 for the season and 4-2-1 in the conference. The Lady Buffs travel to Central, S.C. today to face Southern Wesleyan University.
