Junior Jaime McConnell gives speech before being elected 2005-2006 SGA President.-Andrew Stauffer |
Milligan held its annual Student Government Association elections on Tuesday for the executive council, as well as for class presidents and representatives. The tabulated final results released that evening announced junior Jaime McConnell as the newly elected student body president.
McConnell and her running mate sophomore Christian Thompson, who was elected vice president, focused on the importance of developing better communication among the student body, SGA and the administration in their campaign speeches.
“Not everyone is happy with the current policies,” said McConnell, “otherwise there would be no point in having SGA.”
McConnell expressed that having a better communication system would help to motivate and speed up changes in policies. Other avenues of communications that she hopes to create include having more frequent open forums, semester initiatives and allowing more opportunities for suggestions from the student body.
Thompson also encouraged students to serve, volunteer and encourage others.
“Service is something that happens everyday, not just on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.” Thompson said.
Running for office against McConnell and Thompson were juniors Lindsey Vogt and Ryan Allcott. A rather unusual aspect of their campaign was the absence of Vogt who is currently completing an internship in Washington, D.C.
Junior Randall Moore was elected treasurer over freshman Ian Swallen. Freshman Maggie Blankenship ran unopposed for the position of secretary.
Class presidents and representatives were elected for each class with the exception of the senior class representatives. No juniors ran for the four available positions so the representatives will be named at a later time.
