According to head coach Danny Clark, the baseball team plays all games with victory in mind. With a 5-3 record over break, they seem to be doing just that.
The Buffs began their spring break on a positive note when they defeated conference team Bryan College at home in three games. The respective scores were 8-7, 11-2 and 13-0.
The first game, which ended with a home run by senior Dustin Price “gave (the team) a spark to come out and win the second game,” Price said. “Hopefully it will prove to be a turning point in our season because we have played nowhere near our potential up to this point in the season.”
Milligan also walked away triumphant from two conference games at UVA Wise, sweeping the Cavilers 6-5 and 16-5.
In the first game, Milligan scored four runs in the first inning after junior Will Little hit a three run homer. The final two runs of the game were added in the second inning, after which Milligan held the Cavilers to a disadvantage. Wise took the early advantage in the second game, but the Buffs steadily built up their score, peaking in the sixth and seventh innings with seven runs.
“I was glad to see us finally get hits in crucial spots,” Clark said.
Although the Buffs improved their conference record over spring break, non-conference games did not have the same result. The team fell to Southern Polytechnic State University (Ga.) 5-6 and 1-2 and lost 4-10 to North Georgia College.
Clark said that the team is beginning to gel. “I hope we can build on this weekend and get on a run for the rest of the season,” said Clark. “The thing that excites me is we still are not playing up to the level I know we can.”
Currently, the Buffs are 12-12 for the season and 8-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
