Students had the chance to participate in two intramural activities since returning for the semester: poker and pingpong. The poker tournament took place Feb. 11 and the pingpong tournament took place Feb. 16.
The poker tournament, new to the intramural program this year, is a result of Intramural Director Mike Murray’s attempt to increase the number and type of activities in the program. Murray said he wanted to host a spades tournament, but more students were interested in poker.
Eighteen individuals signed up to play but only six showed up in the fireside lounge on Feb. 11, two days after the originally scheduled tournament would take place. The poker game was supposed to be played Feb. 9, but was pushed back two days because of a freshman humanities exam.
“I was disappointed that there weren’t that many people there, but as for the competition, it was pretty good,” said freshman Alex King.
The game lasted for three hours, with King winning around 10 p.m.
“I went in there with my game face on and took it,” King said.
Murray said he would “plan on doing (the poker tournament) again.”
The pingpong tournament was single elimination, with each game lasting to 21 points.
“Only 8 of the 18 players that were signed up, showed up,” said Murray. “But everyone that did had a good time and it went well.”
The games started at 7 p.m. and lasted for an hour and a half. Milligan alumnus and missionary in residence Kip Lines won the tournament.
Intramural basketball sign-ups will be in the cafeteria during lunch and on the intramural board in the lower level of the field house until Feb. 20 at. Games will begin the following week.
