Milligan defeated at Mars Hill tournament

The Milligan volleyball team lost three matches last weekend in the Mars Hill Tournament without winning a single game against Pfeiffer, Mars Hill, or Presbyterian Colleges.

“Although it was disappointing to lose, we got good experience because the teams we played were of a different division,” freshman Allison Langrel said. 

In the first match against Pfeiffer on Friday the Lady Buffs lost in three games with scores of 23-30, 21-30 and 15-30. Freshman Dianne Sooter contributed 11 assists and senior Myra O’Dell had eight. Freshman Tara Earhart had six kills, and sophomore Joy Dobbs and Langrel added five kills each. Freshman Morgan Hyatt, junior Lindsey Wetherholt and Langrel all contributed one block each.

On Saturday, Milligan squared off against Mars Hill where the Lady Buffs lost in three games with scores of 24-30, 25-30 and 21-30. O’Dell had 12 assists, Sooter had 11 and Wetherholt had five. Dobbs had nine kills and Earhart added eight. Dobbs and freshman Beth Snapp each contributed two aces. Sophomore Katie Mullins and Snapp each had nine digs, with Earhart adding 12.

In their last match of the tournament, Milligan lost again to Presbyterian on Saturday with scores of 14-30, 16-30 and 23-30. Sooter led with seven assists, followed by O’Dell with five and Wetherholt with four. Hyatt led the team with five kills, and Dobbs and Earhart each contributed four. Sooter, Earhart and Dobbs each had one ace, and Mullins and Earhart each had seven digs.  

“We hope that we can show what we are made of once tournament time comes because we are talented and we have good players that will step up during the tournament,” Langrel said. 

The team’s overall record is 9-21 and 7-9 in the conference.
