The Institute for Servant Leadership now offers Milligan students internship grants for unpaid positions within non-profit organizations and churches.

“It gives them some practical experience in the real world and makes (students) ask the question, ‘Is this really what God wants me to do?’” said Beth Anderson, director of the Institute for Servant Leadership.

Any student, regardless of her or her major and class year, can apply. To complete the application process, students need to know for what organization and in what position they intend to work. The Institute for Servant Leadership requests an additional paragraph stating goals and expectations for the internship.

Students can earn academic credit for the internship, but they must have a faculty member supervise, evaluate, and grade it. The internship grants are not based on financial need. Anderson stated that the only restriction is that the grants are limited to interns that work for agencies that cannot afford or pay for the internship positions.

According toPresident Don Jeanes, the not for profit agencies must promote programs that are consistent with Christian values.

The Institute for Servant Leadership distributes $10,000 of the Lilly grant money for the internships each year. Each internship pays $1,000 to $1,500 per student, and only seven to ten will be selected each year. The Institute for Servant Leadership Steering Committee awards these internship grants. The committee includes Jeanes, Anderson, Academic Dean Mark Matson, Vice President of Institutional Advancement Todd Norris, Vice President of Enrollment Management David Mee and Vice President of Student Development Mark Fox.

Deadlines for applications are Oct. 31 for spring 2004 and March 31 for summer and fall 2004.
