The Lady Buffs added two wins and one loss to their record last weekend by defeating Covenant College and Tennessee Wesleyan but losing a third match to Bryan College.
Milligan hosted the three conference games on Friday evening and Saturday. Their two wins and one loss improved their overall record to 5-9.
Friday’s match against Wesleyan quickly headed in the right direction as Milligan put the first two games away 30-22 and 30-18. The Lady Dogs fought back in the third to take away their only win 23-30. The Lady Buffs closed out the match by defeating Wesleyan 30-16 in the fourth game.
Covenant College challenged the Lady Buffs in their first game, with points volleying between the teams until the Lady Scots secured a win at 28-30. Milligan proved victorious in the following three games, beating Covenant 30-27, 30-20 and 30-20.
The late afternoon match against Bryan College was Milligan’s only defeat for the weekend. Milligan fell behind in the first two games, losing 22-30 and 26-30. The team pulled together to win the third game 30-28, but lost the match when Bryan took the fourth game 26-30.
Junior Lindsey Wetherholt feels good about their performance on Friday and Saturday.
“I think we played really well (last weekend),” she said. “We are gelling as a team and becoming more as one instead of individuals.”
Freshman Morgan Hyatt led the team in all three matches in kills with 14, 10 and 12 respectively. Sophomore Kari Meredith served up six aces against Bryan College, the most anyone had for the weekend. Meredith also led in digs versus Wesleyan with 15. Senior Katie Mullins had 12 digs in the Covenant game and freshman Beth Snapp led with 17 in the game against Bryan.
On Sep. 16, Milligan will travel to Bluefield. The Lady Buffs next home game is Sept. 23 against King College, the team’s biggest rival according to Coach Hyatt.
