Fitness center update

In a disappointing turnout by students last semester, only $400 was raised for new equipment in the Milligan College Fitness Center.
Only $8 was collected at the end of a chapel service last spring and just under $200 was given during the drive-in movie during Marvelous Monday. The alumni office matched that amount bringing the total to $400.
According to Director of Alumni Relations Theresa Garbe, none of the money has been spent because not much can be done with the small amount that was raised.
Regardless of the delays, the fitness center’s look changed slightly during the summer. Athletics Director Ray Smith has taken care of removing old equipment and repairing what was broken.
“We hope to plan more fundraisers throughout the year because students still have an interest in renovating the fitness center,” Director of Student Life Danielle Booth said.
Last May, Social Affairs paired up with the alumni office in a matching grant program that asked students to donate money towards giving the fitness center a face-lift. The alumni office pledged to match the donations up to $1,000.
“It is my hope that students will take on this challenge again and contribute more significantly to the project,” Garbe said.
The fitness center was selected for the matching grant last January because Social Affairs felt it was the area on campus that needed the most improvement.
