Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams were unable to capture victories earlier this week against the Virginia Intermont College Cobras in Bristol, Va.

The men, who played at VI, were only able to win a single match to post a final score of 1-8. The only player to secure a win was senior Adam Campbell as he won in singles 6-4, 6-2. This is the second match this season that Campbell has been the only player to win and prevent the Buffs from being shut out by their opponents.

The women had the home court advantage but it was not enough as they only won two matches. The doubles team of senior Amy Vincent and freshman Krissi Denton defeated VI 8-4.

“I think we do really well together as a doubles team,” said Denton, “We need to work on our serves…if we work on that, our game will improve.”

The other win came from junior Cheri Lomison who won in two sets with scores of 6-3, 7-6. The rest of the team struggled and fought hard, but were not able to defeat their opponents, thus leaving the team with a losing score of 2-7.

Nevertheless, both teams appear to be improving as the season continues. Both scores were better than the scores Milligan’s previous encounter with VI this season. The men had been completely shut out 0-9, and the women had only won a single match 1-8.

“We’re second in the conference right now. We played really tough teams in the beginning but our confidence is up now and I think we can go all the way,” Denton said.

The loss brought the men’s record to 3-7 for the season. The women have hit even as they have won four matches and lost four matches. The teams will next compete against UVA Wise next week.
