Last Thursday, the White Dolphins reclaimed their Intramural Championship title after defeating ICP (Insane Clown Posse) in double overtime at the Steve Lacey Fieldhouse.

“It was a great game,” said Anthony Dunning, assistant director of intramurals. “The game was more physical than a college basketball game, but that’s the way intramurals is.”

After nailing a three-pointer, Bubba Thomas sent ICP into the second half leading the Blue Dolphins 26-24.

ICP lead the Blue Dolphins until Andrew King hit a three-pointer with 8:20 left on the clock giving the Dolphins an edge 38-36.

ICP and the White Dolphins took turns leading until Dolphin’s Travis Deyton made a free throw tying the game 45-45, sending the teams into a five-minute overtime.

Sophomores Parker Creel and Brian Rossen and Milligan graduate Mike Thompson together scored six points giving ICP the lead 51-45 at the beginning of overtime.

The White Dolphins, however, made a come back thanks to Nathan Thomas. With less than a minute left, Thomas made two three-pointers tying the score 53-53.

The Dolphins had a chance to win the game after they regained possession, when ICP lost control of the ball, but King missed a shot sending the teams into double overtime. From this point on, Blue Dolphins dominated. Dolphin’s Thomas and Brad Paswater collectively scored four points in the beginning making the score 57-53 Dolphins.

With less than 10 seconds left, and the score being 61-57 Dolphins, ICP’s Creel made a three-pointer bringing the competition to a one-point game, 61-60. Luckily for the Dolphins, Paswater was fouled with 4.5 seconds left, making both free throws, giving the Dolphins a three-point lead. The Dolphins secured the win when Thompson missed a three-pointer at the last second. The Blue Dolphins beat ICP 63-60.

“We played very well together,” said Thomas. “That’s why we won it (championship) this year and last year. We’ve all known each other for a couple of years now, so we know what each other is thinking. That’s why we play so well together.”

On the other hand, the women’s tournament, which was scheduled to occur during the same time, never took place. Big Ballers, which consisted of women from the soccer team decided to forfeit the tournament because they did not have the time to play. Wally’s Second String was declared the women’s tournament champion.

“I was disappointed because we played really hard, we enjoyed playing, and we wanted to play to close out the season,” said junior Wally’s Second String member Adrienne Sutphin. “On the other hand, we were extremely excited that we won because we went in with the attitude that we were just going to have fun and not be very good.”

Intramurals will continue after Easter break with team handball and indoor volleyball.
