At a news conference on Wednesday, Academic Dean Mark Matson announced that students will be able to take the Old and New Testament Bible Survey classes anytime within their first two years at Milligan.  The policy has been accepted.

“Our hope is that this policy will help students succeed in the early years at Milligan,” said Matson.

Matson said that students who receive an extremely low grade in Humanities will be allowed to withdraw from the course; however, students must know that in dropping a Bible survey class, they must have both New and Old Testament Survey completed by their junior year.

“I am personally in favor or the policy,” said Matson. “I prefer to see students have more flexibility generally, but also aware that they are going to have to accept more responsibility then they have in the past.”

Matson introduced the policy a few years ago, and it was not approved by the academic and faculty committees.  The policy was reintroduced this semester and is now taking affect.

Matson said that the freshman load can be difficult and overwhelming.  He also said that this policy may help provide the flexibility that some students need to get through the sequence of classes.

Matson said that the intention of the new policy is to allow “students who find themselves overwhelmed in their first semester and therefore providing some means of controlling their schedule might actually find themselves more successful.”
