Last Thursday, Brevard (N.C.) College defeated the Lady Buffs volleyball team in three games (24-30, 15-30, 17-30). Sophomore Joy Dobbs had seven kills and freshman Morgan Hyatt added six more. Senior Myra O’Dell had four aces and nine assists. Freshman Dianne Sooter benefited the team with seven assists of her own. Senior Katie Mullins had 11 digs and sophomore Kari Meredith had seven.
“It was disappointing, but we are a new team, hopefully it will come together,” said Meredith. “Even though we’re young, we’re a quick team and have a lot of time to learn.”
On Saturday and Sunday, the Lady Buffs played in a tournament in Maryville, Tenn. On Saturday, Milligan went 1-2 in the first round of the tournament with a win against Hanover College (32-30, 28-30, 31-29, 30-25).
They lost to Messiah College 21-30, 19-30 and 29-31 and to Randolph-Macon 15-30, 27-30, 30-28 and 22-30. Hyatt had 34 kills, six aces, and 16 digs. Dobbs added to the point count and totaled 23 kills with Hyatt contributing five aces. O’Dell had 49 assists and freshman Allison Langrel picked up 8 blocks.
On Sunday, the Lady Buffs lost their final tournament match to Rhodes College 24-30, 28-30 and 18-30. Hyatt led the team with two blocks, four digs and nine kills. Dobbs contributed with five aces and four digs. Mullins added four digs and O’Dell had 14 assists.
