Instrumental Analysis

OFFICE HOURS:

10:00-11:00  MWF

10:00-11:00 TR

COURSE DETAILS:

Objectives:  To present various forms of instrumental qualitative and quantitative analyzes.  Both the theoretical and instrumental aspects of the techniques will be discussed.  Hands-on experiences with IR, UV, HPLC, and gas chromatography will complement the theoretical aspects.

Student Learning Outcomes:

The course will present design, function, and theoretical basis for analytical instrumental techniques.

        I.  With respect to the various analytic systems above, the students will be able to:

                    a.   explain general theory of each technique

                    b.   draw "block" diagrams for each technique

                    c.   explain variations currently available for each technique and the their pros and cons

                    d.   analyze cross relationships between techniques

These aspects will be evaluated by in class examinations and laboratory manipulation of instruments..

II.  Development of critical thinking skills will be demonstrated by applying the aspects in outcome I,  analyzing instrumental unknowns and assembly of surplus instrumental components.
