COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The study of the Laws of  Thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and chemical kinetics

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1.  The Laws of Thermodynamics.

        a.  The students are expected to be able to understand and analyze the various thermodynamic parameters relating to the three laws.

        b.  Students will be expected to understand the inter-relating character of the three laws.

        c.  Based on the three laws, students will be expected to apply the theoretical considerations of the three laws to both real world and hypothetical situations.

2.   Equilibrium reactions will be examined in various forms; solution equilibrium, electrochemical equilibrium, and biochemical equilibrium.

        a.  Students will apply the laws of equilibrium to real world situations.

        b.  Students must understand and be able to interrelate the various forms and expressions for the equilibrium constants.

3.  Chemical kinetics; zero, first, second, and third order, will be discussed, including reversible, equilibrium, reactions.

        a.  Students will derive overall kinetic expressions for multi-step processes based on the general single step processes listed above.

        b.  Students will be able to analyze various factors affecting reaction rates; including  pressure, inert components, and temperature.

Student performance will  be judged based on in class and out of class examinations.
