MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 6, 2001)—A new organization supporting athletic scholarships will host an organizational dinner next Thursday, March 15, at Colonial Heights Christian Church in Kingsport. All former athletic alumni and fans are invited to attend the free informational dinner.

The Milligan College Varsity Club (MCVC) was created last fall by a group of Milligan alumni to provide endowed scholarships for Milligan athletes.

“The college has numerous academic and need-based scholarships that have been endowed by alumni and friends of the college, but few athletic endowments,” said 1975 alum Dan Harding, who is heading up the group. “The Varsity Club is looking to build a program that will meet this need.”

The endowment will be under the direction of the group’s leadership council, chaired by Harding, and Gina Adams, class of 1996. The athletic endowment will fund scholarships from the investment proceeds of the endowment, and annual donations will be used to increase the endowment, explained Harding, who was co-captain of the 1975 men’s basketball team.

“The Varsity Club complements the current athletic Booster Club at Milligan,” said Adams, who helped lead the 1996 women’s tennis team to their first national championship appearance. “While the Booster Club provides support for athletics programming, the Varsity Club provides scholarship assistance to recognize and honor outstanding student athletes.”

Individuals may join the Varsity Club by making an annual contribution of at least $100 to the MCVC Athletic Scholarship Endowment. All members who join by December 31 will be granted charter membership. In appreciation of support, all members will receive updates about the athletics program, bookstore discounts and free admission to athletic events on campus, as well as special recognition in college publications.

“The Varsity Club offers alumni and friends of the college a new opportunity to be a part of a program that has been an integral part of their time as a Buffalo or Lady Buff,” said Harding.

The organizational dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, at Colonial Heights Christian Church at 105 Meadow Lane in Kingsport, Tenn. The dinner is open to all Milligan alumni and friends. There is no charge for the meal, but reservations are requested, by calling Dan Harding at 423-239-2743 or emailing him at dnjharding@onemain.com.

“This is an opportunity to meet with old friends and enjoy meeting new fellow athletic alumni. It will also be an opportunity for alumni to provide input into how we can make the Milligan College Varsity Club a broad-based part of the school’s athletic future,” said Harding.
