New furniture delivered to Milligan dorms
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (July 20, 2005) – The parking lot of Milligan College's Hart Hall could be confused for any truck stop along Interstate 81 this week. Five 53-foot tractor trailers are delivering 500 brand new solid oak desks and chairs to dorms throughout the Milligan campus over the next few days.
“The new furniture is part of Milligan's commitment to continually improve and upgrade campus residence halls and student facilities,” said Joe Whitaker, Milligan College vice president for business and finance.
The new furniture was completely custom made to meet the needs of students.
“Several people were involved in the furniture design and selection including Milligan's service manager for facilities, Jonathan Robinson, selected students, college administration and a local carpenter. The design objective was to best meet students' educational and domestic needs,” said Whitaker.
There were many considerations when designing the desk. Students will enjoy a much larger surface area than the previous desk tops. A center drawer with a flip down front will allow students the opportunity to store their computer's keyboard or enjoy more writing and storage space. Three shelves on the left side open to the front and on the side allowing even more storage of textbooks and other dorm room decor.
The laminate top will be more scratch-resistant and durable. A hole in the back center allows for computer, television or other cables to be concealed behind the desk while increasing workable surface area.
“New furniture is just one aspect in which Milligan is striving to enhance the student's educational experience and satisfaction while attending Milligan College ,” explained Milligan President Don Jeanes. “Construction on a new six court tennis complex will be completed by this fall and funding is currently underway for a new student convocation center and theatre.”
