Milligan awards over $30,000 in scholarships during Bible Bowl

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (June 9, 2005) — Leaning over his buzzer, Matthew Godwin furrowed his brow in deep concentration. As the quizmaster read the question, Godwin recognized a clue and hit the button on his buzzer. Looking down to make sure he was the first to ring in, he began to quote a text from the book of Luke.

Godwin's correct answer earned him and his teammates each $1 , 250 in scholarships to Milligan College. The team from Kissimmee, Fla., traveled to Milligan for the 22 nd annual Bible Bowl tournament, held June 5-8. Over 240 participants, youth ministers and volunteers attended the tournament.

Fifteen states were represented, and teams hailed from locations as distant as Texas and Colorado.

In a typical Bible Bowl game, two teams of three or four junior high and high school students face off in a points-based competition. Fifteen questions are asked within a time frame of 14 minutes, and at the end of the questions or time—whichever comes first—the team with the most points wins.

Points are earned by ringing in during a “toss-up” question and answering correctly, much like the head to head competition at the beginning of a round of “Family Feud.” After earning 10 points for a toss-up, students have a chance to garner as many as 40 bonus points by answering more questions about the selected text.

Those who are successful win scholarship money. At this tournament, over $30,000 in scholarships to Milligan was awarded to various players. These s cholarships will be honored by the college for those recipients who chose to apply to Milligan and are offered admission.

Ryan Deininger, a junior from Malvern, Ohio, who started participating in Bible Bowl seven years ago, said that his Milligan scholarships helped him to choose a college.

“(The scholarships) will definitely help me when I come here; it made the choice easier,” said Deininger. “(Bible Bowl) is fun. I enjoy the fellowship and the competition and plan to participate one final year.”

The team from Malvern will continue to play this summer in tournaments at Kentucky Christian University and Cincinnati Bible University. They will finish their season at the National Bible Bowl tournament in Chicago, Ill., which will take place in early July.

Tournament director Ashley Rolston, a Milligan senior from Louisville, Ky., said that Bible Bowl was part of what brought her to Milligan in the first place.

“I was exposed to several Christian colleges through Bible Bowl and I realized that I wanted to attend Milligan. I had a lot of scholarships from Bible Bowl to help me out. Having been at the college every summer for five or six years, I felt really comfortable here.”

Six Milligan students—all former Bible Bowlers—served as tournament directors.

“It's great to see kids in God's word,” said Rolston. “I think it's good to see all of us who participated in the tournament be involved in planning it.”
