MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (May 2, 2012) — This fall, Milligan College will begin offering a political science major designed for those who wish to understand politics, effectively engage the world around them and make a difference.
The political science major prepares students to study law, work in government service, research or teach in a school setting.
There are two emphases available — the general track and the international politics track. The general track is designed for students who desire a broad foundation in all areas of politics within the United States, while the international politics track prepares students to engage political realities within the context of global studies.
“Our new political science major is a perfect fit for a Christian liberal arts college like Milligan,” said Garland Young, Milligan’s interim vice president for academic affairs and dean. “Our calling at Milligan is to develop students into servant leaders who will change lives and shape culture. We are confident that this new program will produce skilled and thoughtful graduates ready to pursue careers in public service and who are qualified to pursue graduate work in political science.”
Milligan previously offered a minor in political science, and faculty noticed an increasing demand for a major in the discipline.
“There is strong faculty support for this new major, so we are delighted to offer it to our students,” said Dr. Susan Higgins, chair of Milligan’s area of social learning.
The curriculum in the political science major provides a broad foundation in the study of American political history, the institutions of government and governmental agencies, and the relationships among levels of governments as well as the people served by those governments and their agencies.
In addition, Milligan students have the opportunity to choose to participate in the American Studies Program in Washington, D.C., in consultation with their adviser. This semester-long program is offered through the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities’ BestSemester program.
“We need young Christian scholars who are equipped to pursue leadership roles in civic life,” Young said. “In so doing, they will have a chance to have a lasting impact upon individuals and society.”
