Sigma Tau Delta was formed in 1924 as an outgrowth of the Dakota Wesleyan English Club. The pledge and motto of Sigma Tau Delta is “to endeavor to advance the study of the chief masterpieces, to encourage worthwhile reading, to promote the mastery of written expression, and foster a spirit of fellowship among those who specialize in the study of the English language and of literature, ever keeping in mind the international motto…Sincerity, Truth, Design.”

The purpose, insignia, Greek letters, English words assigned to them (Sincerity, Truth, Design), and the colors cardinal and black were all established by the founder, Judson Q. Owen. The society was nationally announced on May 24, 1924 since several English departments in universities around the country had formed chapters. Milligan College formed its chapter in 1988, the same year that the society was brought to the international level.
