Area of Performing, Visual & Communicative Arts
The music program at Milligan seeks to produce life-long learners and lovers of music, as well as accomplished performers and avid music consumers. Students can pursue music in a variety of degree programs or simply elect music courses to enrich their liberal arts education. Participating in music at Milligan also allows students and faculty to experience new levels of worship and service.
Scholarships & Auditions

The music area offers a wide range of choral and instrumental ensembles including:
The Concert Choir, a choir of both men and women, performs extensively on campus and throughout the United States, appearing at churches, high schools, and conventions and appearing with professional orchestras throughout the region. Their repertoire is varied and includes classics, spirituals, hymn arrangements, and musical theater.
The Milligan College Jazz Ensemble is devoted to the performance of jazz and pop styles, with emphasis on ensemble playing, solo playing, and improvisation. The ensemble has debuted an original musical, presented an original work for jazz ensemble, performed Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite with a symphony orchestra, and opened for the Ellis Marsalis Trio at a North Carolina Jazz Festival.
The Milligan College Orchestra performs throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and collaborates frequently with professional ensembles and arts organizations, including The Civic Chorale, the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, the East Tennessee Regional Symphony, and the City Youth Ballet. The orchestra also champions new works and has performed the world premieres of three pieces including Three Genres by John Grubb and Genesis by internationally renowned composer Kenton Coe.
Milligan Women's Chorale is an all-female ensemble which sings literature of different styles ranging from sacred to popular. The chorale performs for churches and various organizations in the Tri-Cities area as well as on campus.
Milligan music graduates teach at all levels of music education, serve in music ministry positions, conduct professional music organizations, teach studio music, and perform professionally. Graduates of the music area have pursued further music studies at institutions throughout the U.S.
