OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL MAJORS AND MINORS

CONCERT & RECITAL ATTENDANCE

Concerts - Growth in musicianship includes exposure to a broad range of performance media and styles. Consequently, music majors and minors are required to attend a specified number of musical performances during each semester. Majors must attend 6 concerts each semester and participate in concert attendance for 8 semesters, unless they are doing Student Teaching. Minors must attend 4 concerts each semester and participate in concert attendance for 4 semesters concurrently with their music classroom studies.

Students are responsible for reporting attendance at each concert to the chapel monitor. Two instances of late arrivals or early departures will require additional recital attendance. Students are expected to wear appropriate concert attire; failure to do so may result in the forfeiture of credit for that particular concert. A performance by an area symphony orchestra should be part of each semester's concert attendance. Students may count one approved off-campus concert toward completion of the concert attendance requirement each semester by presenting a printed program or ticket stub.

From time to time, students are prohibited from satisfying the evening concert attendance requirement because of involvement in college sports teams, college classes, or college work-study. In such cases, students are required to satisfy the full requirement by attending previously approved off-campus concerts, and by submitting proof of attendance (printed program or ticket stub). In extreme cases, students may be allowed to satisfy the requirement by viewing a video or listening to a recorded musical performance prescribed by a music faculty member. The student will submit to the chair a written review of the music heard.

Student Recitals - Attendance is also required at student recitals that occur at 11:00 a.m. on specified Tuesdays. (See Appendices). A schedule of both student and other recitals is on the Music Area Homepage or click here to go directly to the recital requirements. Failure to meet all recital attendance requirements will result in a half a letter grade (5 points) reduction in every music class final average for the semester. Recital attendance is posted in your Angel folder. Students who miss their last applied lesson before their scheduled performance date will not be allowed to perform. Students who have failed to secure and rehearse with their accompanist at least two weeks before the scheduled performance date will not be allowed to perform. Applied study professors have to be present at their student's scheduled afternoon or evening recital performance.

Wonderful Wednesday - Instructional methods in music are often unlike those of other academic areas. Rescheduling of events such as recitals and a full day of lessons is impractical, and a missed lesson means a full week's worth of instruction is lost. When Wonderful Wednesday (or its equivalent) occurs, applied lessons will meet at their regularly scheduled time. Music classes and ensemble rehearsals will be canceled in keeping with the rest of campus with the following exceptions:

  1. Ensembles will rehearse at their normal time if a performance is less than one week away.
  2. Student recitals and evening recitals will take place as previously scheduled.

ENSEMBLE PARTICIPATION

Ensembles - Music majors must participate in an ensemble for six semester hours, except during Student Teaching: K-12. Music minors must take an ensemble for four semester hours. Music majors fulfill their particular ensemble requirement with participation in an ensemble that uses their particular applied study skills for at least four of the required six semester hours.

Music Education-Instrumental majors with a principal applied area in percussion, brass, or woodwinds must satisfy their four-semester hours of ensemble requirements with two semester hours of Johnson City Community Concert Band (Civic Band). A maximum of two semester hours in Jazz Ensemble (if instrumentation appropriate) may count toward the ensemble credit.

General Music Studies majors-Applied Emphasis with a principal applied area in percussion, brass, or woodwinds, must satisfy their four semester hour ensemble requirements with at least one semester hour of Johnson City Community Concert Band (Civic Band). A maximum of two semester hours in Jazz Ensemble (if instrumentation appropriate) may count toward the ensemble credit. Students may choose any of the above ensembles for the fourth semester hour.

General Music Studies majors-Jazz Emphasis with a principal applied area in percussion, brass, or woodwinds, must satisfy their ensemble requirements with at least four semester hours of Jazz Ensemble and/or Jazz Combo.

For string majors and minors, participation in Orchestra fulfills the ensemble requirement. Ensemble requirements for students whose principal applied area is guitar will be determined on an individual basis by the applied instructor and ensemble directors. Participation in choral or instrumental ensembles fulfills the ensemble requirement for all students whose principal applied area is keyboard.

For all voice majors and minors, participation in Concert Choir or Milligan Women's Chorale fulfills the ensemble requirement.

Music minors with a principal area in percussion, brass, or woodwinds may satisfy two semester hours of the ensemble requirement with Jazz Ensemble (if instrumentation appropriate) and/or Johnson City Community Concert Band (Civic Band).
