OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL MAJORS AND MINORS
CONCERT & RECITAL ATTENDANCE
Concerts
- Growth in musicianship includes exposure to a broad range of
performance media and styles. Consequently, music majors and minors are required to attend
a specified number of musical performances during each semester. Majors
must attend 90% of performances for 8 semesters, unless they
are doing Student Teaching. Minors and Fine Arts-Music Emphasis majors must
attend 75% of performances for 4 semesters concurrently with their music classroom studies.
A schedule of concerts/recitals can been found in the
Appendices . Failure to meet all recital attendance requirements will result in
a half a letter grade (5 points) reduction in every music class final average for the semester.
Recital attendance is posted in your Angel
folder.
Students are responsible for reporting attendance at each concert to the chapel monitor.
Two instances of late arrivals or early departures will require additional recital
attendance. Students are expected to wear appropriate concert attire; failure to
do so may result in the forfeiture of credit for that particular concert. A performance by an area symphony orchestra
should be part of each semester's concert
attendance. Students may count one approved off-campus concert toward completion of the
concert attendance requirement each semester by presenting a printed program or ticket stub.
From time to time, students are prohibited from satisfying the evening concert
attendance requirement because of involvement in college sports teams, college classes, or
college work-study. In such cases, students are required to satisfy the full requirement
by attending previously approved off-campus concerts, and by submitting proof of
attendance (printed program or ticket stub). In extreme cases, students may be allowed to
satisfy the requirement by viewing a video or listening to a recorded musical performance
prescribed by a music faculty member. The student will submit to the chair a written
review of the music heard.
Students who miss their last
applied lesson before their scheduled performance date will not be allowed to
perform. Students who have failed to secure and rehearse with their accompanist
at least two weeks before the scheduled performance date will not be allowed to
perform. Applied study professors have to be present at their student's
scheduled afternoon or evening recital performance.
Wonderful Wednesday
-
Instructional methods in music are often unlike those of
other academic areas. Rescheduling of events such as recitals and a full day of lessons is
impractical, and a missed lesson means a full week's worth of instruction is lost. When
Wonderful Wednesday (or its equivalent) occurs, applied lessons will meet at
their regularly scheduled time. Music classes and ensemble rehearsals will be
canceled in keeping with the rest of campus with the following exceptions:
- Ensembles will rehearse at their normal time if a performance is less than one week
away.
- Student recitals and evening recitals will take place as previously scheduled.
ENSEMBLE PARTICIPATION
Ensembles
- Music majors must participate in a primary ensemble which uses their particular
applied study skill and is approved by their applied professor for six
semester hours. Music minors and Fine
Arts-Music Emphasis majors must participate in a primary ensemble which uses
their particular applied study skill and is approved by their applied professor
for four semester
hours. (Primary Ensembles: Concert Choir, Women's Chorale, Jazz Ensemble, Civic
Band, and Orchestra). Music Education-instrumental majors whose principal
applied area is in woodwind, brass, or percussion must take 2 semesters of
Johnson City Community Band (Civic) as part of their ensemble requirements.
