Alumni Newsletter of the Milligan College Music Area

July 2003 Opus 19, No. 1

FACULTY: RESIGNATION AND APPOINTMENT

After five years in a full-time position and several years as an adjunct, Carlene Eastridge has resigned her position as Assistant Professor of Music. During her tenure Carlene taught piano, music ministry, and directed the Milligan Singers. Her personable and caring manner will be missed.

Carlene leaves Milligan to found the Eastridge Music Academy in Johnson City for musical instruction in a variety of areas.  Our best wishes are extended to her in this business endeavor.

Dr. Kellie Brown has been appointed to a full-time position as Assistant Professor of music.  Brown has had adjunct professor status for the past several years but recently taught an almost full-time load.  So, we were glad to simply affirm with full-time pay what she was already doing.

Dr. Brown is director of strings and has distinguished herself in developing the Milligan College Chamber Orchestra, the Milligan College String Quartet, the Beginning String Ensemble.  She has become a favorite of students in basic conducting and music history classes.  Five years ago she began the annual Strings Camp for elementary, middle school, and high school students.  We are pleased to be able to recognize her value to the music program by granting her full-time faculty status.

IMPROVING THE PROGRAM

New courses, changes in programs – all designed to make music at Milligan College helpful to students and their careers.

Worship Leadership Major was developed in cooperation with the Bible/Ministry area and  replaces the Music Ministry major. It is designed to be more effective for the music and worship orientation of many churches. Courses in the major include preparation in music ministry, drama, biblical studies, and other areas of practical ministry.

Students will have room in their schedules to take Introduction to Music Technology, Orchestration and Arranging, or Composition. Additionally, they will able do the Contemporary Christian Music semester at Martha’s Vineyard on the coast of New England!  A hard life!

Fine Arts Major - Music emphasisThe Fine Arts major provides three different emphases – Art, Photography, and Theatre Arts. The music theatre emphasis, which used to be part of the General Music Studies major, has now become a Fine Arts major with a music emphasis.

New courses To strengthen our offerings in instrumental music, we recently added Brass Choir and String Quartet.  Also, we created a Piano Class for Beginners, a user-friendly class that will meet in the Keyboard Lab.

NOT THE MILLIGAN COLLEGE CONCERT CHOIR

It is really the concert choir of Eau Gallie Christian Church, in Eau Gallie, Florida. Rob Meier (’00), Minister of Worship in the Eau Gallie church, organized this choir just a year ago, and it already has made a name for itself.

When the Eau Gallie church dedicated its new building, the choir performed a full concert with most of the repertoire memorized. Enthusiasm for the group has been high.

The choir is negotiating with the local symphony to sponsor a joint pops concert next summer. Choral music touches the heart, sharpens the musician, and reaches into communities – in the name of the Lord.

THIS IS THE MILLIGAN COLLEGE CONCERT CHOIR

This spring the Concert Choir completed a successful choir tour throughout Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana.  Many alumni came out to support their favorite college choir.

 HOMECOMING 2003!

We hope to see you during Homecoming October 24-25. Check the Milligan website (www.milligan.edu) for a schedule of great events.  You’ll also be able to register for the weekend on line.

FIFTH ANNUAL STRINGS CAMP PLANNED

Our annual Strings Camp for junior high and high school students is scheduled for July 28-August 1. Directed by Dr. Kellie Brown, the camp will feature Steven Leonard, conductor in DeKalb County (GA) public schools.

Other faculty include Milligan music alumni Lisa Hollis (violin and chamber music) and Katie Hamilton (cello, bass, and chamber music). Lisa Hollis is currently in graduate school at Northern Arizona University.

The week will culminate in a wonderful concert on Friday evening. These kids put together an amazing repertoire in one week. Have any kids who are strings players? Send them our way!

CONCERT CHOIR WILL PERFORM WITH JOHNSON CITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

This fall the Concert Choir will sing Gershwin with the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra. The event will mark the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Mountain Home Veterans Administration facility in Johnson City. President George W. Bush has been invited to speak.

CHORAL UNION PERFORMS
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS' DONA NOBIS PACEM

This spring, Milligan Singers, Concert Choir, and others of the college community combined to sing the Ralph Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem.  The texts of scripture and Walt Whitman poetry were timely with the Iraqi war on everyone’s mind.  Dr. Bert Allen, Chair of the Area of Social Learning and Professor of Psychology, assembled graphic wartime photography that was shown during certain movements of the performance.

SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS

HELD THROUGHOUT YEAR

Auditions are held annually for acceptance as a music major. During the  audition, students will be considered for scholarships in voice, piano, orchestral instruments, and organ.

Consideration is given to talented high school seniors who exhibit interest in a career in music education, music ministry, or other music careers. Auditions may be arranged in person, by cassette, or by video tape. Students wishing to be considered for music scholarships should audition by March 1.

On February 20, 2004, Milligan College will host on-campus scholarship auditions during the Admissions Open House. Students also are encouraged to audition during the fall Open House, on Friday, November 14.

Scholarship amounts vary and are renewable annually. To be eligible for these awards, entrants must have applied and been accepted to Milligan College. Participation in the scholarship audition serves as an audition for music major status.

Contact Rita Myers in the Music Office (423-461-8723) for details about auditions. Contact the Admissions Office (800-262-8337) for details about Open House weekends. Encourage potential music majors in your family, church, and community to consider a music education at Milligan!

CHRISTMAS CONCERT
BRINGS FESTIVE
DECOR AND MUSIC TO SEEGER

Last year’s gala Christmas Concert brought out a crowd of almost 1,000.

“The quality of the music, the beautiful decorations, the inspiring closing – all these things meant it was very well received,” said John Wakefield, Associate Professor of Music. “We received a pretty good mandate to do a similar concert next year.”

Dr. Bill Gwaltney and wife, Mitzi, called to say  how outstanding the program was, and what a worshipful experience it was for them. “It was a real pleasure to see music at Milligan progressing so well.”

This year’s Christmas Concert is set for Sunday evening, December 5, at 8:00 p.m. in Seeger Auditorium.  A free ticket will be necessary for admission to the concert.

FACULTY NEWS

Recently, Kellie Brown published Christmas Story, and an arrangement of Purcell’s An Evening Hymn.  Both are scored for chamber orchestra.

Also, Brown served as concertmaster with the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra and played in the orchestra for the musical Chicago at Bristol’s Paramount Center.  She also performed a recital with Dr. David Runner.

Brown has performed in concerts with the Bristol Concert Choir, King College Symphonic Choir, First United Methodist Church of Johnson City, and Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church.

She has been awarded a contract with Mellon Publishers to do a book on music in works of fiction.

David Runner attended a music and worship conference at Lake Junaluska, NC and played several organ recitals in the region.

David Runner and Carlene Eastridge  presented  a joint organ recital on campus.

This past year John Wakefield attended the World Symposium on Choral Music, was elected to the board of directors of the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, and attended the Fellowship of Professors meeting at Johnson Bible College.  He also attended the national conference of The Hymn Society of the United States and Canada, and accompanied senior high youth from St. John’s Episcopal Church on a pilgrimage to major sites of church history in England and Scotland.

This summer Wakefield studied “Worship, Theology, and Spirituality” at Christ Church College, Oxford University.

This past year, Simerly performed a series of jazz concerts at high schools in Southwest Virginia and at Southwest Virginia Community College. His website, www.ricksimerly.com ,highlights his new CD release.

SURVEY RESULTS AND WHAT WE DO ABOUT THEM

Here are responses to the 2002-03 Music Alumni Survey sent annually to alumni who graduated one, five, and ten years from the current year. We hope you’ll find that we paid attention, when making improvements to the program.

Most of you felt that the majority of your music courses were effective.  Fifty percent of respondents felt that we needed additional music faculty, facilities, or courses.  We’ve been able to bring several adjunct professors to the music department.  These faculty members have helped primarily in instrumental areas.  We’re working this summer on additional acoustical treatment of facilities.

What additional courses were suggested? History of Musical Theatre, classes in Kodaly, Dalcroze, and Orff.  We’ll try to provide those kinds of experiences in workshops and seminars and incorporate them more into methods classes.

Several of you thought that Form and Analysis and Orchestration should be required of all music majors.  Unfortunately, curriculum restraints across the campus prohibit requiring the course.

Some people asked for additional applied studies professors, and we’re providing those as the need arises.

Some of you suggested the construction of a new theatre and a new performing arts hall.  The current capital campaign includes funding for a student center that will house a theatre.

A lighter class load per semester and more individualized programs were suggested.  We’ve helped students lighten their loads by reducing the number of hours required in majors and by eliminating the requirement of a minor.

What about advice to current music students?  Work at a local church and not just the “hot” church of the moment. Prepare for real music ministry. Don’t over commit yourself. Save everything -- lesson plans, rehearsal plans/outlines, teaching and ministry materials from conventions and conferences.  Become an organized packrat.

“Professors, thank you for your time and love for your students.  Your passion for teaching music and Christ impacted me beyond ways I can verbalize.”

One student wrote that when she was interviewing for a job back in January, all of her interviewers were very impressed with the education she had received from Milligan.

We’re grateful for your responses. We’ve listened and made numerous changes in music at Milligan.

Grace (Carroll ’38) Albright remembers that Milligan had a mixed quartet in her days.  It represented the college at churches and organizations (Albright was their accompanist).  “But a tour like the choir has – never even dreamed of!” In her four years, the department’s one faculty position was filled by three different people! But what she learned was put to good use – teaching privately and in public schools and earning a master’s degree at the University of Kentucky.  She’s never regretted going to Milligan: “it was a blessing, a priceless opportunity, and a gift from Heaven” she hopes to repay. Her address is 106 Wesley Dr., Wilmore, KY 40390.
