Music Notation

Newsletter of the Milligan College Music Area

July 2000 Opus 16, No. 1

THERE’VE BEEN SOME CHANGES MADE!

FACULTY CHANGES

We’re ashamed to admit it, but it’s been a long time since you received an issue of "Music Notation." (We didn’t have to tell you that, did we!) In the meantime, some major changes have taken place, and we thought you’d like to know about them.

Dr. John Campbell’s departure two years ago brought the first faculty change. John Wakefield came to the position of Associate Professor and Chair of the Music Sub-Area. John was previously on the Milligan faculty, and left twenty years ago to become Associate Minister at Westwood Hills Christian Church in Los Angeles. In 1985 he became Minister of Worship at Clovernook Christian Church in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The previous year saw the retirement of that dear lady of music at Milligan – Evelyn Thomas. Besides Wakefield’s return the following year, Carlene Eastridge was brought on as a full-time faculty member. Many of you will recall that she taught a sizeable load for several years as an Adjunct Professor. Carlene teaches piano students, some music ministry courses, directs Milligan Singers, and coaches "Heritage."

In 2000 Kellie Brown was designated Full-Time Adjunct Professor. She will teach an average of nine hours per semester, and function in many ways

as a full-time faculty member. Kellie has developed a fine Chamber Orchestra. She also teaches Music History and Literature, Music History Survey, and Basic Conducting, as well as violin and viola.

This past spring, Tom Stampfli, Assistant Professor in Music Education and Piano, resigned to become Associate Professor and Director of Piano Studies at Greenville College.

The position that Tom Stampfli formerly held has been reconfigured to broaden the scope of music at Milligan. Anne Elliott, a fine piano teacher in the Tri-Cities, has been secured to teach additional piano majors.

This wonderful development has opened the possibility for a full-time instrumental faculty member. A Search Committee is currently interviewing some very good candidates for the position. The person will develop a concert band and jazz ensemble, teach Secondary Methods and Materials, and teach applied study in either woodwinds or brass.

You’d also been interested to know that these days we have additional Adjunct Professors who teach cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, and trumpet. We’re excited about the new possibilities.

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA A WELCOME ADDITION

String’s the Thing around our department these days. Last year saw more violin, viola, and cello students than ever before. And they all put together a very nice sound in our Chamber Orchestra, under Kellie Brown’s direction.

The group performed in two concerts on campus last year. They also played for Baccalaureate this spring. A highlight of one of the concerts was a performance of the Handel soprano aria, "Let the Bright Seraphim" from the "Samson" oratorio. Senior Music Education major Sabrina Hess won the competition that had been held for this honor. Matt Inkster, Milligan Adjunct Professor in trumpet, and brass professor at ETSU, provided the trumpet part for the concert.

The Chamber Orchestra is making a name for itself. This fall they will be featured in a concert of the Johnson City Symphony. The Symphony has also provided scholarship money to assist us in attracting more students to the Chamber Orchestra.

CONCERT CHOIR COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL MIDWESTERN TOUR

This spring the Concert Choir completed a successful choir tour through Louisville, Lexington, Indianapolis, Chicago, and several points in between. Many music alumni came out to support their favorite college choir.

At First Christian Church of Chicago, fully a third of the crowd was Milligan alumni. John Wakefield, conductor, even saw former students of his, who now have sons and daughters in the choir! Wakefield had a great time reminiscing with them, but he says it makes him feel a little old!

SECOND ANNUAL STRINGS CAMP COMPLETED

This June saw the completion of Milligan’s second annual Strings Camp for junior high and high school students. Directed by Kellie Brown, the camp featured Sande MacMorran, conductor of the Knoxville Youth Symphony, as conductor of the orchestra for the week.

Other faculty included Jane MacMorran teaching violin, and Tim Mutschlecner teaching cello. Tim also offered a class in jazz strings, and Jane offered a class in Scottish fiddling.

The week culminated in an amazing concert on Friday evening. The orchestra and chamber group repertoire put together in one week was amazing.

Have any kids who are strings players? Send them our way next year.

NEW LOCKERS!

Many of you will remember it as the "Madrigal Costume Closet." But this fall, music students will know it as the place where the lockers are.

The large closet – lower level of Seeger, rear hallway – has been cleaned out. Costumes have been moved, walls have been painted, new light fixtures installed, the closet doors removed, and the area has been lined with lockers.

Music students will no longer need to haul all their music books, instruments, and other "stuff" all over campus. They’ll have better storage in good ol’ Seeger.

CALLING ALL ALUMNI!

We’re hoping to see you on Alumni Weekend, October 27-28. On Friday evening the 27th, Music Chair John Wakefield will be singing a Faculty Recital featuring American Spirituals. After the middle of August, you can check the Milligan web site for other great events of the weekend. You can also register for the weekend on the web site.

CHRISTMAS DINNER 2000

For the annual Christmas Dinners, the Chamber Singers will be at their best, with Elizabethan and Renaissance madrigals, and period Christmas tunes. We think they’ll provide just the right combination of jolly and serious Christmas. And, of course, the theatrical fare and culinary fare will delight as well.

Dates for the Dinners are Dec. 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9. Watch for news of when tickets go on sale.

SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION CLOSES MARCH 15

Auditions are held for music scholarships in voice, piano, orchestral instruments, and organ. Consideration will be given to talented high school seniors who exhibit a high level of interest in a career in performance, music education, or music ministry. Auditions may be arranged in person, by cassette, or by video tape. Audition deadline is March 15, 2001.

On February 16, 2001, Milligan College will host on-campus scholarship auditions during open house. Scholarships are in varying amounts. These are also renewable annually. To be eligible for these awards, entrants must have an ACT score of at least 24, an SAT score of at least 1000, or a high school grade point average of at least 3.3. They also must have already applied to Milligan College, and been accepted. Participation will serve as an audition for music major status.

A special Open House will also be held that weekend, and Honors Recital will be the same evening, Friday, February 16, at 7:30. Contact Rita in the Music Office (423-461-8723) for details about auditions. Contact the Admissions Office (800-262-8337) for details about the Open House. Encourage potential music majors in your family, church and community to consider a music education at Milligan!

LIVE IN GEORGIA, FLORIDA, OR THE CAROLINAS?

Concert Choir Spring Tour 2001 will be in your "neck of the woods." Details aren’t complete yet, but we’ll keep you posted. Bring your family, watch and listen, and remember when you were up there singing.

Also bring along prospective music students. We’ll be happy to talk with them, and do an "on the spot" audition if it’s desired.

HE WASN’T A MAJOR BUT HE SURE MADE MUSIC

Many music alumni from the mid-seventies at Milligan will remember Gary Richardson (’78). He wasn’t a music major, but he certainly has turned out some music in the meantime. We thought you’d like to know about his latest musical, "The Rock and the Rabbi."

Lee Fierbaugh (’94) Director of Public Relations for Milligan, says, "the plot of the musical involves an incredible friendship between the apostle Peter (the Rock) and the long-awaited Messiah (the Rabbi)." The show debuted at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida, in May 1998, and was received well by the Tampa Bay area community.

Milligan’s own Professor Dick Major served as directing consultant for the production of the musical last September at the Hard Rock Live Theatre at Universal Studios in Orlando. After that production went to Richardson’s home church – Mountain Christian Church in suburban Baltimore, as a part of the church’s 175th anniversary celebration. Earlier this summer, Gary’s musical was performed in Ryman Auditorium (home of the Grand Ol’ Opry) in Nashville.

CD’s of the musical are available in the College bookstore – (423) 461-8733. Kudos to Gary. He always was a creative guy; now that creativity has gotten attention around the country. We hope this depiction of "The Way" makes it to "Broadway."

CODA

This fall we are seeing continued growth in the Music Area. Eight new talented music majors will enroll at Milligan. New pianos, new lockers, new paint jobs, and fresh attitudes have boosted work habits considerably.

But there is much to be done, and you can help: Let us know about talented high school music students. Encourage them to visit campus and to participate in the Music Scholarship Competition. Better yet, bring them yourself.

Help us identify persons who could give financial assistance for music scholarship endowment, equipment, or facilities for music at Milligan. And thank you very much for the moral support, prayers, and financial assistance which many of you already provide.

Let us know if there’s any way we can serve you.

What is the Music Notation?

Music Notation is our annual newsletter that helps us stay in touch with music alumni and keep them informed about music at Milligan.
