February 1995 Opus 12, No. 2
MUSIC MINISTRY MAJOR IN PLACE FOR FALL 1995
As of this fall, Milligan College will offer a B.A. in Music Ministry.
Designed for the student who is preparing to serve a local church in music ministry, the
degree received approval at the fall meeting of the trustees. New courses such as
"Music and Worship" and "Music Ministry Methods" have been approved,
and discussions between the music and Bible/ministry faculties mean that ministry as well
as music will be at the heart of this new major, with the combined disciplines comprising
both major and minor.
MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS REACH NEW HEIGHTS
The music area will have available for the first time eight
scholarships for incoming students in the amount of $3,000 each. This exciting
turn of events is the result of a rethinking of our scholarship offerings by the
administration, and the decision to invest in particular disciplines at Milligan that show
promise of growth. It's nice to be on that list. These scholarships are renewable for up
to four years. To be eligible for consideration, a prospective student must have an ACT
score of 24, or an SAT score of 1000, or a high school grade point average of at least
3.3. The scholarship candidate must also have been accepted by the College, and have
completed an audition for the music faculty.
Two additional scholarships of $2,500 each will be
available, requiring an ACT of 23, an SAT of 985, or a high school g.p.a. of 3.1. Again,
acceptance by the College and an audition for the music faculty are required.
If you know of college-bound students who are looking to major in music
and who have something to offer, please steer them our way. But we need to hear from them
soon for entrance next fall. Priority consideration for scholarships will begin March
1 this year, February 1 next year. Prospective students who miss the priority deadline
may yet be eligible if all scholarships have not been awarded and accepted.

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY LAB NOW IN PLACE
You may have seen the front-page article in the Fall Semester 1994
edition of the Mill-Agenda about what was in the works. We are pleased to announce
that the Milligan College Music Area now features a state-of-the-art electronic music
technology laboratory as a part of its keyboard curriculum. With the cooperation of
the college administration, and with the help of Milligan friends who anonymously donated
the down payment, we have purchased the laboratory instruments which are now in place and
functioning.
This new lab will allow Milligan music students to study piano in a
group environment, increasing student contact with the instructor from 30 minutes per
week to 2-3 hours. The group format also enhances instruction in basic musicianship and
ensemble practice, while improving student interest in the basic coursework for piano.
Students will be able to study such cutting-edge technology as sound synthesis,
digital and MIDI sequencing, and computer/keyboard multimedia research. Once we procure
new computers (donations towards this goal would be welcome), our lab will be a complete
music technology facility.
This facility will allow Milligan to develop a new avenue of
performance: The Milligan College Keyboard Ensemble. With the many orchestral and
electronic sounds available on these keyboards, piano students will be able to perform a
wide variety of ensemble literature, from Bach to Sousa! We look forward to this ensemble
becoming a contributing member to the traveling performance groups found at Milligan
College.
The lab will be open to student use 20 hours a week for personal
practice and technology research. This facility-the best of its kind in the nation-exceeds
similar facilities at much larger institutions such as Eastman School of Music and the
University of Tennessee, and it will aid in drawing talented music students to Milligan.
Tom Stampfli will be teaching class piano and directing the
Keyboard Ensemble, and his nationally-recognized expertise in these areas will benefit
Milligan students. Tom will be also be teaching workshops in music technology this summer.
Give him a call for more details: (615) 461-8978.
We are proud of this new facility and would like to share it with you.
Milligan will host an open house to introduce the music technology lab to the
general public on Sunday, March 5, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. You are invited to come and get
acquainted with this exciting new technology. The music technology laboratory is located
in Lower Seeger behind the auditorium.
ENGLISH PIANIST MARTIN JONES GIVES MASTER CLASS
On November 8 Martin Jones gave a master class in piano on the
stage of Seeger Chapel at Milligan. This internationally-renowned artist worked with seven
Milligan students while other music students and faculty watched. The session was most
informative, and a good experience for all involved; Jones showed himself to be not only a
world-class performer but also a capable teacher. Jones performed with the Johnson City
Symphony Orchestra November 13, and gave a fabulous solo piano recital at Milligan on
November 14.
This is the second master class offering in as many semesters. Last May
baritone G. William Bugg gave a master class in voice prior to singing the title
role in the Choral Union's performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah. Negotiations are
underway with the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra about Milligan hosting a master class
next fall with another guest artist.
We would like to see master classes happening on a regular basis. If you
or someone you know would be interested in endowing a master class series, please contact
the Milligan music office at (615) 461-8723.

FACULTY NEWS
The mother of Evelyn Thomas passed away February 24. Evelyn
teaches voice and piano as an adjunct faculty member. Her elderly mother had been unwell
for some time.
John Campbell and his wife Terri will welcome their third
child, Rebecca Lee, due March 5. John will also have an article, titled
"Mozart and the Baron: Musical Patronage at Work," published in the May 1995
issue of Choral Journal, about Gottfried van Sweiten's relationship with the
Viennese composer. John also composed an avant-garde choral work on C. S. Lewis'
"Screwtape Letter XII" that was premiered by the Chamber Singers at the Lewis
Literary Festival in Kingsport on Feb. 8.
David Runner and his wife, Lisa Adkins Runner, mourned the
passing of her father, E. T. Adkins, from a heart attack Feb. 14 at his home in Chatham,
Virginia. David accompanied the Concert Choir in a performance of J. S. Bach's Magnificat
on Dec. 8. He accompanied Handel's Messiah for the Johnson City Civic Chorale Dec.
17, and a program for Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol on Dec. 18. He was also at
the organ for the Johnson City Messiah Sing-In in early Dec. He will be attending a
Church Music Workshop in Knoxville March 3-4, and will give an organ recital at Milligan
April 10. He will also give a recital at First Christian Church, Elizabethton, on May 7.
Tom Stampfli has been busy putting the music technology lab
together. In his spare time he participated in the conventions of the National Association
of Music Merchants and the Texas Music Educators Conference, as a clinician and as
national education consultant for Kurzweil Synthesizer Co. The concert by his keyboard
ensemble from the University of Oklahoma at the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy back
in October received six curtain calls from a normally jaded convention. Feb. 25 at
Milligan he will lead a workshop on "Using Music Technology on a Shoe-String
Budget." Alfred Publishing Co. has officially released his composition for duo piano
titled "Fiesta de San Antonio." In March Tom will be presenting a workshop,
"Improvisation: Regaining Old Skills through New Technology," at the national
convention of the Music Teachers National Association in Albequerque.
