Q. Should I bring a Laptop or a Desktop with me to Milligan?
A. Either will do as long as they have network capability. Both a laptop and a Desktop have their pros and cons weigh both before deciding. Typically a Desktop has better performance while the Laptop has mobility.
Q. Is there a special brand of computer you recommend?
A. This is really a users preference.
Q. Can a User use an Apple computer
A. Sure. All computers are welcome. You may actually need to purchase a Apple computer if you are majoring in communications.
Q. Will you fix my computer if it breaks
A. We have a hands off policy regarding students PC's or Mac's. We can offer support for the software and help your find the answer to solve the issue. If your computer has a hardware issue you will need to contact your hardware vendor for repair.
Q. What software do you have available at Milligan?
A. We currently offer the office 2007 suite for PC and the Office 2008 suite for Mac both priced at $6.00. The office suite can be purchased from the Information Technology helpdesk. You will need to have your Milligan photo ID with you. We also have McAfee Antivirus for free for both PC, and Mac. It is required that all PC's or Mac's have an antivirus installed at all times and is up to date.
Q. What else will I need to bring with me?
A. You will need to purchase a Category 5 or 6 cable sometimes referred to as an Ethernet cable. You can purchase this at any major retailer or from our bookstore. The length that you will need really depends on your placement in your dorm room.
A. If you plan to connect to the wireless you will need to have at minimal Windows XP SP2 or Greater and a wireless card that supports the G standard.
A. A Jump drive or as it is sometimes referred to as thumb drive is a good optional device to bring with you.
