The Teacher Diversity Program Grant
This program exists to help address the shortage of underrepresented groups
in the teaching profession, to nurture teachers who embrace diversity as an
instructional tool, and to help Milligan secure the mission-based
educational benefits of a diverse student body.
Who is eligible to apply?
Undergraduate or graduate teacher education students are eligible to apply.
Applicants must sufficiently demonstrate a commitment to diversity as an
instructional tool.
Categories of potential teacher education students include teacher aides,
substitute teachers, college graduates pursuing initial teacher licensure,
and ex-military personnel.
What funds are available?
Grant awards are available for up to seven (7) students. Award amounts
vary based on financial need and fund availability and can be used for
tuition and fee assistance, textbook and classroom materials, Praxis test
fees, professional association fees, funds to attend professional
conferences, and personal support stipends.
This project is funded under an agreement with the State of Tennessee.
Awards are made on a rolling basis, so early application is strongly
encouraged.
Awards are annually renewable if the student maintains a minimum 2.5
college GPA, makes satisfactory progress toward completion of a degree
objective, and complies with the following regulations: be a good citizen on
campus; represent the school in a dignified and respectable manner; and
comply with all moral and lifestyle expectations as set forth in the Student
Handbook.
How do I apply?
Interested students must first complete the Milligan
admissions
application and be offered admission to the college. They must then
complete the Teacher Diversity Program
Grant
Application and interview process, including an essay describing how
they
believe their diverse background has shaped who they are and how those life
experiences demonstrate a commitment to diversity as an instructional tool.
What are the selection criteria?
Selection criteria include academic performance, character, commitment
to service and leadership, commitment to diversity as an instructional tool,
ability to enhance and enrich the diversity of the Milligan College
community.
Candidates must complete and file a
FAFSA each
year and apply for any possible federal and state aid.
