OUR DEFINING MOMENT

Few Christian liberal arts colleges have a longer or richer heritage than Milligan College. Established in 1866, our mission then and now is to educate Christian leaders — the hope of the world. As we begin the new millennium, our mission has not changed, but the demands and realities of society have.

The cross of Jesus Christ is central at Milligan College. It is central to our name —conveyed in our logo to show that Milligan cannot exist without the cross. It has shaped our past and given us a rich heritage on which to build. It shapes our present, offering purpose and direction for everything that we do. And, it is our imperative for the future. Any success that we achieve as a college will come from our desire to exalt Christ in all things.

More than ever, the world needs servant leaders, prepared to act in faith and love, to bear the light of truth, to change lives and shape culture. Our nation and our world need Milligan College now more than ever. To secure Christian education as the hope of today’s world, we must move boldly forward to unite the message of Jesus Christ with great academic achievement and reputation.

Now is the time to ensure that the light of Christian education will not dim but grow ever stronger. This is our defining moment.

THE MILLIGAN COLLEGE CAMPAIGN FOR CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP

As a first step toward realizing the vision and fulfilling the long-range Strategic Funding Initiatives outline here, the college has launched The Milligan College Campaign for Christian Leadership — the largest and most comprehensive capital campaign in the college’s history.

Milligan’s $30 million campaign will provide funding to transform the college through building programs which enrich the student life and learning experience; through ongoing support to under-gird annual scholarship programs along with academic and campus life offerings; through dramatically increased endowment resources which provide new scholarships and support academic excellence; and through the development of new programs which advance the college’s vision with strength.

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVES

Because the cross of Jesus Christ is central at Milligan College, we present the overarching objectives of our campaign in relation to the areas of the cross. As the circle of the cross represents unity in Christ, this area conveys our vision to unite in Christian leadership and service. As the arms of the cross represent Christ reaching out to a world in need, they convey our desire to reach out and join hands with others to advance Christian education.

  VISION
Milligan’s vision to change lives and shape culture through a commitment to Christian leadership will be our call to action in service to our students, our community, our churches, and our world.
TRANSFORMATION
The campaign will move beyond fundraising to transform the college in pervasive and lasting ways.
PARTICIPATION
Milligan’s alumni will participate in supporting the college at levels that far exceed most other colleges and feel a strong sense of connection to the college.
PARTNERSHIP
Milligan will reach out in partnership with our constituency, our community, and our churches in new ways where there is a shared vision to change lives, shape culture, and build leadership.
FOUNDATION
Milligan’s alumni and friends will build a foundation for the future of the college by establishing new endowments through their estate plans.

STRATEGIC FUNDING INITATIVES

  Endowment: A Foundation for Tomorrow
Long-term, any college’s success depends on the ability to build a foundation for the future through endowment. Building an endowment that better underwrites programs ensures that operating funds can be used to bolster academic excellence, enhance the student life experience, and seize new opportunities.

Endowed funds will enable Milligan to assist deserving students with adequate scholarship assistance, attract and retain the best faculty, develop new programs that strengthen the curriculum, and properly maintain campus facilities, all while keeping the cost to students manageable. A key strategy in building endowment and strengthening the academic program is the establishment of faculty Chairs of Excellence and Honors Scholarships. An endowed scholarship can be named for a gift starting at $25,000. A faculty chair can be endowed for
$1 million. Professorships can be created and named
for $500,000.

Long-term, the college must increase the endowment, through addition to principal and growth, to $50-60 million, an amount that is sufficient to underwrite 10 percent of the college’s budget.

The Campaign for Christian Leadership will take the first step toward achieving this long range goal by establishing new endowed scholarships, faculty chairs, and program endowments.
Annual Fund: Advancing Current Scholarship & Programs
Operating a college committed to excellence requires more than a foundation for the future. We must be prepared to meet the needs and seize the opportunities of the day. Annual funding is needed to support the ongoing programs of the college—scholarships, academics, faculty support, student life, campus ministry, and more.

These annually budgeted programs are vital in order to attract and retain promising students, to support teaching resources and faculty development, to enrich and enhance the college experience outside of the classroom, and to expand programs for spiritual growth.

The Campaign for Christian Leadership will focus first on strengthening support of current programs and scholarship needs through the Annual Fund.

Academic Programs
The foundation of the college’s ability to excel academically comes from the strong support of the college’s faculty and their ability to teach effectively. Each year, more than $3.5 million is needed to support academics at Milligan. Giving may be designated for:

• specific majors or programs
• faculty development
• P. H. Welshimer Library
• technological developments and improvements

Student Development
Student Development activities include Residence Life, Spiritual Life, Chapel, Service Learning, and Intramural and Intercollegiate Athletics. More than $1.6 million is needed every year to support these crucial activities. Gifts may be designated to underwrite:

• chapel programs
• counseling services
• career development
• service learning and mission opportunities
• specific athletic teams and their programs

Facilities and Grounds
Keeping the campus functioning properly and looking good requires more than $1 million each year for renovations and improvements, landscaping, and equipment. Gifts may be designated to support:

• equipment needs
• maintenance and improvement projects
• campus groundskeeping and beautification

  Capital Imporvements: Growth Needs
The college’s physical resources — buildings, furnishings, and equipment — are essential to teaching, learning, and living. Enrollment has grown significantly in the past decade, and campus facilities have not kept pace. We must expand, build, improve and maintain the campus in order to support our high quality programs at optimal enrollment.

The Campaign for Christian Leadership will focus on completing The Central Campus Project, a $12-15 million project, which includes the Derthick Hall renovation, the development of The Commons, and a new Campus Center.
Other long range strategic initiatives include the following:

Residence Halls: Refurbishing and making additions to the residence halls to ensure that the residence life experience is satisfying and complements a vibrant academic program.

New Classroom Space: Additional classrooms with computer-assisted learning, lecture halls, and additional faculty offices.

Library Expansion & Renovation

Athletic Facilities: The college’s athletic facilities need refurbishing in order to reflect the quality indicative of a highly competitive athletic program.

Development of Campus Property/Infrastructure:
Expansion and improvements to the Physical Plant, energy management systems, technology infrastructure, etc.
Investment Funds for New Programs & Expansion: Opportunities for Impact

One of Milligan’s hallmarks is its desire to identify and offer education in areas that are not currently being addressed. We must develop and improve academic programs to find new areas where Christian leaders are needed.

The Campaign for Christian Leadership will focus on developing the The Milligan College Institute for Christian Leadership, which will promote Christian leadership and service. This will be accomplished through new innovative educational programs, opportunities for involvement and collaboration, and recognition of notable leaders in the region and nation.

The Campaign will also focus on:

New Majors and Degree Programs
Student Development, Spiritual Life &
Student Success Programs
Special Scholarship Initiatives
Technology Initiatives
