Boone’s Letterman, Langrel bound for Milligan

It was a special day for a couple of standout athletes at Daniel Boone.

Kacie Letterman signed scholarship papers with Milligan College to continue her basketball career while teammate Allison Langrel signed a volleyball scholarship with the Lady Buffaloes. Both signings took place Monday at the high school.

The duo played a key role for the Trailblazers’ basketball team this season, helping it reach a Class AAA substate contest against perennial state powerhouse Oak Ridge.

Letterman, a 5-8 post-wing, chose Milligan over Bluefield College and Roane State Community College.

“I really had my heart set on Milligan for a long time,” said Letterman. “I really like the program and coaches. And I’ve met the girls and really get along great with them, and I played against most of them.

“I was really shocked when coach (Rich) Aubrey called and told me. I was really excited. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Boone coach Tim Campbell said Letterman has been a big part of Boone’s success.

“She has been an outstanding player for four years,” said Campbell. “We had 87 wins in her four years.”

Letterman said there are a couple of areas she will have to improve on to get ready for the college game.

“I will probably have to pick up my offense,” said Letterman. “I think my defense will be OK, but I will just have to step up my overall game a little bit.”

Encouragement from family and coaches combined with discipline and working hard were the ingredients to getting the scholarship, Letterman said.

Elementary education is a likely career path for Letterman, who hopes to have a shot in the future at trying to do what Campbell does.

“I would love to coach,” said Letterman.

As for Langrel, her decision to accept Milligan’s offer was made easier by the school and coach.

“I really enjoy Milligan and I really like the coach (Kim Hyatt) as a person,” said Langrel. “She’s a great lady.”

Langrel said she couldn’t see herself just being a college student without the athletics.

“I’m very active,” she said. “I really wanted to continue playing athletics in college because I’ve enjoyed it so much in high school.

“This was one of the first offers I got, and I waited around and made sure it was what I wanted.”

Volleyball and basketball weren’t her only sports at Boone as Langrel also excels in track.

“She quite frankly could be the best athlete to come out of here,” said Campbell. “That’s saying a lot with Rachel Glass being from here. Allison gives you 110 percent in everything she does.”

Langrel said she will have to improve her game to help the Lady Buffs.

“I’m sure there will be areas for me to get better,” said Langrel. “It will take a lot of hard work and effort.”

Something in the medical field is Langrel’s likely choice for an academic path, she said.
