Waddle ups AAC-leading strikeout total to 133
By BUCKY DENT
Bristol Herald Courier

Waddle, Milligan's sophomore pitcher, allowed just one hit and led the Buffs past the Cavaliers 2-0 Wednesday in the State Line Classic at Whitetop Creek Park.

In winning her 19th game against 14 losses, Waddle used just 82 pitches and upped her Appalachian Athletic Conference-leading strikeout total to 133. After working out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first, Waddle faced just one batter over the minimum over the next five innings.

"I was really just relaxed," said the former David Crockett standout. "I don't know why, but I've been on a high all day. I was confident on the mound and I was confident in our defense."

Waddle's confidence in her defense appeared misplaced early as Milligan (20-8, 24-15) dropped a popup and botched a grounder in the first two innings. But her teammates made all the plays after that, including Rebecca Dawson's stick-to-it job at second base for the game's last out.

With the tying runs on base after back-to-back walks, Echo Hagan drilled an 0-1 pitch right at Dawson. The Sullivan South product knocked it down, briefly bobbled it and flipped a hurried throw to first that barely nipped Hagan.

The lone hit for Virginia-Wise (17-6, 21-9) was a jam-shot single in the fourth by Nichole Poore (Patrick Henry) that barely eluded Dawson. Pinch-runner Nichole Todd was gunned down trying to steal second on the next pitch.

"We faced two pitchers yesterday against Montreat that didn't throw very hard," said Cavaliers coach Wayne Leftwich, "and we couldn't adjust against Brandy until the middle innings. We were behind on almost everything.

"Then when we started getting around on her, we hit balls right at people. But this was a very well-played game."

The Buffs' runs came in the first and sixth and followed the same script. Carissa Ellis drilled one-out triples each time and scored on sacrifice flies by former South standout Danielle Gilley.

That was all the support a rested Waddle, who has worked 33 of Milligan's 39 games this season, would require.

"She hasn't pitched since last Wednesday," said Buffs coach Wes Holly. "Lately, she's been getting tired in the fourth or fifth inning of games. But she was a lot stronger today."

Waddle said a familiar opponent helped motivate her as well.

It was the fifth time the teams have met this year, with Virginia-Wise winning three of the first four contests.

"We had a go-to attitude all day," she said. "We wanted to prove to ourselves that we could do it against them at any time and any place."
