Milligan women take Union in final minutes

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 10, 2007) —With a final score of 69-60, the Milligan College women’s basketball team took a slim but decisive victory over the Lady Bulldogs of Union at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse Saturday night with a key 3-point bucket from Kara Monk (Oliver Springs, Tenn.). The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) victory will give the Lady Buffs of Milligan an overall record of 15-12, with an AAC record of 9-7. Union will move to 15-13, 7-9 AAC.

The first half was nip-and-tuck, as the two squads swapped baskets almost point for point. Monk tied the contest 30-30 after draining two free throws to close the opening half of play.

The second half, however, saw plenty action for both teams. Union jumped out early and gained an eight point lead over the Lady Buffs to bring the score to 38-30.  Milligan battled back to eventually tie the game 52-52 with 5:53 left to play after Monk sank a field goal. After both teams fought to gain a slim lead, Monk’s three-pointer at 2:11 would propel Milligan to the AAC win.

Kacie Letterman (Gray, Tenn.) scored a team-high 12 points in the win, while Monk finished the night with 10 points. Also contributing to the Milligan effort was Rikki Baughman (Elizabethton, Tenn.) with eight points and 11 rebounds.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Andrea Hillard and Brooke Smith would score 22 and 13 points respectively.

The next contest for the Lady Buffs will be Tuesday, Feb. 13, at UVA-Wise in an AAC match-up. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
