Lady Buffs tame #11 Lady Lions

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 3, 2007) — With an overall team effort, the Milligan College women’s basketball team was able to upset No. 11 Bryan College, 74-71, in a heated Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest on Saturday night. Milligan’s record will move to 14-10 overall and 8-6 in the Conference AAC). The Lady Lions drop to 19-6 overall, and, as Milligan becomes only the second team in the conference to defeat them, 12-2 AAC.

Leah Anderson (Lexington, Ky.) started things off for Milligan with a trey to put the Lady Buffs up 3-0. Bryan answered the Lady Buffs with back-to-back buckets 3-pointers from Katie Davis, bringing the score to 6-3. Milligan then went on an 8-0 scoring run, including four points from Candace Shelton (Flag Pond, Tenn.), to give the Lady Buffs a five point lead at 11-6. The next exchange between the two foes would come with 5:18 left in the half, as the lead would change four times in a two minute span, ending with Milligan on top by one, 21-20. To end the first half, the Lady Buffs carried their momentum to take a 30-20 lead into the half-time break.

Anderson once again started the second half with a 3-point basket to make the lead 33-20. Milligan would eventually lead by as many as 16 points with under eight minutes remaining.

With the score 59-43 in favor of the home-standing Lady Buffs, Bryan’s Brittany Swanson brought the Lady Lions back into the game. During a 20-7 Bryan scoring spurt, Swanson scored 16 of her game-high 41 points, to make the score 66-63.

Rikki Baughman (Elizabethton, Tenn.) drained two free-throws to push Milligan’s lead back out to five points, only to see Bryan’s Sarah Coffman cut the lead back down to three with a field goal. Baughman went back to the free-throw line and made both attempts to stretch the lead to 70-65. Swanson answered with yet another 3-pointer to cut the deficit to two points with under 30 seconds remaining. Bryan fouled Anderson, and she nailed both free-throws. Swanson retaliated with her final 3-points of the contest with 10 seconds remaining and the score 72-71 in Milligan’s favor. Anderson returned to the line after being fouled and added two free throws to make the score 74-71. Despite a final attempt by Bryan for the tie, Milligan held on for the AAC victory.

Baughman ended the night with a total of 19 points, to go along with her eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and game-high two blocks in the win. Anderson was not far behind, with an 18 point performance and fellow sophomore Hali Sparks (Erwin, Tenn.) added 16 points.

Swanson was the driving force behind the Lady Lions’ performance, as she was 8-of-12 behind the 3-point line in the second half, for her 37 points in the half. To go along with her 41 points, Kellie Thurman added 10 points.

Milligan was near perfect at the free-throw line, as the team was 22-of-24, which included Baughman’s 11-of-11.

The Lady Buffs will next take on Maryville College on Monday, Feb. 5, at Maryville, Tenn. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
