Milligan takes Brevard in tight match
MILLIGAN
COLLEGE, TN (January 18, 2007)---
Hoops were exchanged pretty evenly on Thursday night in a match-up
between the Milligan College Lady Buffs and the Lady Tornados of Brevard
College, with Milligan boasting the home-court advantage. The game’s
final score of 63-54 in favor of the Lady Buffs will improve their
record to 10-8 overall while Brevard drops to an overall record of 4-15.
Rikki
Baughman
(Elizabethton, Tenn.) scored two of her ten points with 13:49 left in
the opening half to put the Lady Buffs on top 13-9. Brevard then went on
a 12-1 scoring run over the next four minutes of play, which included
three 3-point baskets. Milligan answered with 12-4 run to recapture the
lead 26-25 after Kara Monk (Oliver Springs, Tenn.) sunk two free
throws with 5:26 left in the fist half. The Lady Buffs held on to take
the 32-31 lead into the locker room.
Milligan
opened the second half with a ten minute scoring spree of 16-2 to take a
comfortable lead over the Lady Tornados. Brevard made a last ditch
effort to win with a burst of scoring that would narrow the gap and make
the final score 63-54 in Milligan’s favor.
Baughman
ended the night with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, giving the
sophomore her 10th double-double of the season. For her 20
points, Baughman was 10-of-12 from the field and she blocked two shots
and is credited with two steals. Fellow sophomore Hali Sparks
(Erwin, Tenn.) contributed 16 points to the Lady Buffs’ effort.
Brevard’s Samantha Winn and Holly Krogman scored 17 and 15 points,
respectively, in the loss.
On
Saturday the Lady Buffs will face Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC)
opponent Tennessee Wesleyan College (12-6, 5-4 AAC) at the Steve Lacy
Fieldhouse at 2:00 p.m. Tennessee Wesleyan won the earlier match up
