Milligan ends AAC season with split at UVA-Wise

WISE, VA (April 22, 2007) --- The Milligan College Lady Buffs’ softball team ended their portion of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) season on Sunday afternoon with a split at UVA-Wise. UVA-Wise won the first contest 4-2 and Milligan came back in the second game to win with a similar 4-2 score. With the split, Milligan moves to 28-20 overall and 8-6 in the AAC. Their 8-6 conference record currently has Milligan tied with Tennessee Wesleyan for fourth place. UVA-Wise improved to 10-4 in the conference and 24-19 overall.

UVA-Wise jumped on Milligan in the second inning with a RBI single off Mary Wilson’s bat scored Christine Cantone. The Lady Cavs struck again with a solo home run from Shelley Newton in the third inning.

A two-out rally in the fourth inning padded UVA-Wise’s lead with two more runs. Alicia King started the rally with a double, followed by a RBI double from Wilson. Sarah Frazier singled which allowed Wilson to score the fourth run of the game for the Lady Cavs.

Milligan cut into the deficit in the sixth inning. Senior Megan Aldridge (Johnson City, Tenn.) led the inning off with a home run, her conference leading 14th of the season. Jessica Blevins (Elizabethton, Tenn.) doubled and came home when Leah White (Gray, Tenn.) delivered a double of her own to make the score 4-2.

Jennifer Wise (Clermont, Fla.) took the loss on the mound after she threw six innings against UVA-Wise. In Wise’s (15-6) outing, she gave up four runs on eight hits with one strikeout.

At the plate for the Lady Buffs, Aldridge finished the game 2-for-4 with her solo home run.

Amanda Wheller Sims picked up the win after seven innings of work on the mound. She allowed two runs on four hits.

After a scoreless first inning, Mallory Tincher (Jacksonville, Fla.) started the second inning off for Milligan with a solo home run to give the Lady Buffs an early 1-0 advantage.

The third inning saw Milligan add two more runs to their lead. A two-out double from Blevins was followed by another double from Aldridge. Blevins scored on the double. White singled and Aldridge came around to score to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Lady Buffs.

UVA-Wise used a two-run home run in the bottom half of the third inning to climb back into the game. Amber Harvey hit the blast over the left-center field fence with Hannah Ellis on base.

Milligan added another run in the fifth inning to their lead with a two-out RBI triple from Aldridge. Heather Poindexter (Germanton, N.C.) led the inning off with a double but did not cross home plate until Aldridge drove her in.

Maegan Hambrick (Lexington, Ky.) pitched a complete game to earn her seventh win of the year on the mound for the Lady Buffs. Hambrick scattered six hits, allowed two runs and struck out five.

Lauren Snead took the loss for UVA-Wise; she gave up three runs over her three innings on five hits.

Milligan’s bats were led by Aldridge with a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs while Blevins added a 2-for-4 performance with two doubles and a run scored.

Milligan will welcome NCAA Division II member Brevard (N.C.) College to Anglin Field on Monday, April 23, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader. The Lady Buffs swept both games of their doubleheader at Brevard on March 28. Milligan won the first game 5-0 and finished the sweep with a 6-4 win in the second contest. Monday will also be the last home doubleheader of the season for Milligan.
