Milligan splits AAC doubleheader with TWC

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 19, 2007) --- The Milligan College Lady Buffs’ softball team won the first game of their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader with Tennessee Wesleyan College 4-1, but TWC bounced back for a 1-0 win in the second contest. The doubleheader was played Thursday afternoon at Milligan’s Anglin Field. With the split, Milligan moves to 25-19 overall and 5-5 in the AAC. Tennessee Wesleyan shares a similar 5-5 conference record and holds an overall record of 15-17.

Game 1 Milligan 4 Tennessee Wesleyan 1

Tennessee Wesleyan took the lead in the third inning when Ginny Swearengen came home when Milligan’s Kayla Walker (Tracy, Calif.) threw a wild pitch.

Milligan answered and tied the game in the bottom half of the third inning. Heather Poindexter (Germanton, N.C.) led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Walker. Laken Stewart (Pennington Gap, Va.) singled to put runners on the corner. Head coach Wes Holly sent Stewart to steal second and when Swearengen threw to second base, Poindexter came home to tie the contest.

The Lady Buffs’ bats came to life again in the fourth inning to take the lead for good in the game. Megan Aldridge (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Jessica Blevins (Johnson City, Tenn.) led the inning off with back-to-back singles. Leah White (Gray, Tenn.) followed with another single to right field to drive in Aldridge but a fielding error allowed Blevins to score and White advanced to third. Another RBI single from Mallory Tincher (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored White to make the score 4-1 in favor of Milligan.

Blevins finished the game 2-for-2 with a run scored and a double.

Jennifer Wise (Clermont, Fla.) pitched the final four innings in relief to improve her record to 13-5 on the mound for Milligan. She scattered three hits and added a strikeout.

Beth Williams suffered the loss for TWC. She went six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out two. Leslie Vess went 2-for-4 for the Lady Bulldogs.

Game 2 Milligan 0 Tennessee Wesleyan 1

The first four innings of the second contest went by quickly and neither team was able to push across a run until TWC scored in the top half of the fifth inning. Lisa Fekete singled and stole second to get into scoring position. Vess then singled to score Fekete for the lone run of the contest.

On the mound for Milligan, Maegan Hambrick (Lexington, Ky.) pitched a complete game. Over Hambrick’s (6-5) seven innings, she allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts.

Tincher provided Milligan’s only extra base hit with her double in the second inning. She finished 1-for-3 in the game.

Both Milligan and Tennessee Wesleyan left five runners on base in the second game.

Lindsey Brown also threw a complete game, but she earned the win for TWC. She gave up five hits with four strikeouts.

To go along with the game’s only run scored; Fekete went 2-for-3.

Milligan will return to action Saturday afternoon when Bluefield (Va.) College visits Anglin Field for an AAC doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
