Milligan sweeps North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, SC (February 17, 2007)--- Milligan College swept an afternoon doubleheader Saturday at North Greenville University. The Lady Buffs took the first game 7-1 and the second game 5-4. North Greenville falls to 0-8 on the season.

Game One

North Greenville took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Allison Bailey scored on an error.

Milligan came back with two runs in the third inning. Sarah Smith (Elizabethton, Tenn.) doubled in Kayla Walker (Tracy, Ca.). Later, Jessica Blevins (Elizabethton, Tenn.) singled in Smith.

The Lady Buffs scored one run in the sixth inning as Leah White (Gray, Tenn.) scored on an error.

Milligan added four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mallory Tincher (Jacksonville, Fla.) plated Blevins on a single. The next batter, Leah Fritts (Knoxville, Tenn.) knocked a 3-run homer out of the park.

Milligan’s Megan Aldridge (Johnson City, Tenn.) went 2-for-4 in the game and scored one run.

Walker, who threw a complete game that allowed only one run from four hits over seven innings of play, was credited with the win for Milligan, while Katie Eargle took the loss for NGU.

Game Two

Milligan scored three early runs in the first inning. Laken Stewart (Pennington Gap, Va.) hit the first pitch of the game over the left field fence. Two batters later, Blevins hit a two-run homer to give Milligan a 3-0 lead. Stewart would finish the game going 2-for-4, while White was 2-for-2 in the second match-up.

NGU answered with one run in the bottom of the inning. Shealy Broome scored from second base on a single by Amanda McElveen.

Each team added one run in the third inning. Tincher singled in Aldridge for the Lady Buffs, while Shannon Rainey scored on strike out and dropped ball by the catcher.

In the fifth and final inning, Russell doubled in two runs for Milligan to take a 5-2 lead. McElveen hit a 2-run homer for the Crusaders.

Jennifer Wise (Clermont, Fl.) won the game for Milligan with three innings pitched with one hit and two runs, while Ashley Warlick took the loss for NGU.

The Crusaders will travel to Piedmont College Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

Milligan will travel to Williamsburg, Ky. to take on University of the Cumberlands at 2 p.m. on Feb. 20.
