MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN
(April 4, 2007) --- The
Milligan College
softball team suffered
an Appalachian Athletic
Conference (AAC) sweep
at the hands of Montreat
College on Wednesday
evening at Anglin Field.
The loss drops the Lady
Buffs to 21-17 overall
and 3-3 in the AAC.
Montreat moves to 10-19
overall and 4-6 in the
AAC.
Game 1: Milligan 6
Montreat 11
Montreat scored early
and often in game one,
crossing the plate twice
in the top of the first,
twice more in the
second, and plating four
runs in the third inning
to go up 8-2 after three
innings of play.
The Lady Buffs fought
back for two runs in the
fifth and two more in
the sixth, but it was
too little too late for
Milligan as they were
unable to change the
outcome.
Megan Aldridge
(Johnson City, Tenn.)
was 3-for-3 at the plate
with three RBI and a run
scored while Laken
Stewart (Pennington
Gap, Va.) went 2-for-4
with two runs and an RBI
and Jessica Blevins
(Elizabethton,
Tenn.) was also 2-for-4
and scored a run.
Jennifer Wise
(Clermont, Fla.) took
the loss on the mound
for the Lady Buffs,
allowing ten runs on
thirteen hits in five
innings of work.
Game 2: Milligan 3
Montreat 4
The second game proved
to be a much different
contest though it
featured the same
result. Milligan jumped
out to an early 1-0 lead
in the first inning when
Stewart led off the
inning with a single and
later scored on a hit by
Blevins.
Montreat responded in
the second to tie the
game and added two more
in the third to gain the
lead.
Milligan went into the
bottom of the seventh
inning down by two runs,
4-2, and it looked as
though the Lady Buffs
might muster a comeback
when senior Leah
Fritts (Knoxville,
Tenn.) got the inning
started with a single.
Though Fritts would come
around to score,
Milligan left the tying
run on third base when
the game ended with a
Stewart fly out to left
field.
The Lady Buffs play at
home again tomorrow,
Thursday, April 5,
versus North Greenville
University in a
doubleheader scheduled
for a 2 p.m. start.
