MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 22, 2007) --- The Milligan
College softball team won both games of a doubleheader
on Thursday afternoon over visiting Maryville College by
scores of 3-2 and 4-3. The win improves the Lady Buffs
to 16-12 overall on the season and drops Maryville to
7-5.
Game 1 Milligan 3 Maryville 2
Maryville jumped out to an early lead when leadoff
hitter Samantha Thearp led off with a single and came
around to score. The Lady Buffs responded with a three
run homer from the bat of Megan Aldridge (Johnson
City, Tenn.) that scored Leah Fritts (Knoxville,
Tenn.) and Jessica Blevins (Elizabethton, Tenn.)
for a lead that would stick.
Maryville cut the lead to one in the sixth inning, but
the Lady Buffs were able to hold on for the victory as
Jennifer Wise (Clermont, Fla.) went the distance
scattering six hits and striking out five for the win.
Game 2 Milligan 4 Maryville 3
It was the Lady Buffs who jumped out to an early lead in
game two, as they plated three runs in the opening
frame. Laken Stewart (Pennington Gap, Va.) led
off with a walk and Fritts singled to start the game,
and both scored on a Blevins double. An out later,
Mallory Tincher’s (Jacksonville, Fla.) single
brought Blevins across to put Milligan ahead 3-0.
Maryville came storming back however, with a run in the
third and two more in the fifth to tie the game at
three.
Milligan responded in the bottom of the sixth when
Blevins again doubled and was again brought home by
Tincher. Blevins and Tincher were each 2-for-3 in the
game with 2 RBI apiece.
Maryville threatened in the seventh loading the bases
before game one winner Wise came on to record the final
out by way of strikeout for the save. Reigning AAC and
Region XII Pitcher of the Week Maegan Hambrick
(Lexington, Ky.) went six innings allowing three runs
with four strikeouts for the victory.
The Lady Buffs will challenge ETSU on Saturday, March 24
at 2 p.m. in Johnson City.
