MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 23, 2007) --- The Milligan College Lady Buffs’ softball team ended used clutch hits in a sweep of NCAA Division II member Brevard (N.C.) Game 1 Milligan 3 Brevard 2

With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Milligan’s Jessica Blevins (Elizabethton, Tenn.) hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield to drive in Heather Poindexter (Germanton, N.C.) for the go-ahead run in the contest.

Brevard jumped in front with a RBI single from Katie Brown that allowed Aimee Rogers to score the first run of the game in the top half of the third inning.

Milligan answered in the bottom half of the third when senior Megan Aldridge (Johnson City, Tenn.) delivered with two RBIs on her double. Fellow senior Leah Fritts (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the inning off with a single and Laken Stewart (Pennington Gap, Va.) followed with another single in front of Aldridge’s double.

A bases-loaded walk to Kristina Clayton pushed Brown in to tie the game 2-2 in the Brevard half of the fifth inning.

Kayla Walker (Tracy, Calif.) pitched six-plus innings in her start to earn the win. Walker (4-4) gave up two runs on seven hits and mixed in four strikeouts. Jennifer Wise (Clermont, Fla.) recorded the final three outs to pick up her fifth save of the season.

Stewart finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a stolen base and one run scored.

Brevard was led by Brown’s 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Rogers also accounted for two hits as she went 2-for-3.

Game 2 Milligan 1 Brevard 0

Brevard’s Rachel Howard kept the Lady Buffs scoreless for the first 6 2/3 innings but she could not record the final out in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings. Holly Napier (Pennington Gap, Va.) singled and Stewart followed with a game-winning RBI double to give Milligan the 1-0 non-conference victory.

On the mound, Maegan Hambrick (Lexington, Ky.) pitched three shut-out innings of relief out of the Lady Buffs’ bullpen to improve her record to 8-5. She scattered three hits and struck out one.

At the plate for Milligan, Stewart was 1-for-4, but she provided the game-winning RBI. Aldridge went 2-for-3 in the contest as well.

Lindsey Morgan provided a 3-for-3 performance at the plate for the Lady Tornados.

The Lady Buffs will travel to Maryville (Tenn.) College for their final doubleheader of the season. The first game against the NCAA Division III foe is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28. Milligan swept both games of their doubleheader on March 22 at Anglin Field. The Lady Buffs won 4-3 in the first contest and won another one-run contest, 3-2, in the nightcap against Maryville.
