The Milligan College Lady Buffs’ softball
team ended used clutch hits in a sweep of NCAA Division II member
Brevard (N.C.) College on Monday afternoon at Anglin Field. Milligan
scored a 3-2 win in the opening game and finished the sweep with a
1-0 victory. After the two wins, Milligan improves to 30-20 on the
year.

With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning,
Milligan’s Jessica Blevins
(Elizabethton, Tenn.) hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield to drive in
Heather Poindexter
(Germanton, N.C.) for the go-ahead run in the contest.
Brevard jumped in front with a RBI single from Katie Brown that
allowed Aimee Rogers to score the first run of the game in the top
half of the third inning.
Milligan answered in the bottom half of the third when senior
Megan Aldridge (Johnson
City, Tenn.) delivered with two RBIs on her double. Fellow senior
Leah Fritts (Knoxville,
Tenn.) led the inning off with a single and
Laken Stewart (Pennington
Gap, Va.) followed with another single in front of Aldridge’s
double.
A
bases-loaded walk to Kristina Clayton pushed Brown in to tie the
game 2-2 in the Brevard half of the fifth inning.
Kayla Walker
(Tracy, Calif.) pitched six-plus innings in her start to earn the
win. Walker (4-4) gave up two runs on seven hits and mixed in four
strikeouts. Jennifer Wise
(Clermont, Fla.) recorded the final three outs to pick up her fifth
save of the season.
Stewart finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a
stolen base and one run scored.
Brevard was led by Brown’s 2-for-2 performance at the plate. Rogers
also accounted for two hits as she went 2-for-3.

Brevard’s Rachel Howard kept the Lady Buffs scoreless for the first
6 2/3 innings but she could not record the final out in the seventh
inning to send the game to extra innings.
Holly Napier (Pennington
Gap, Va.) singled and Stewart followed with a game-winning RBI
double to give Milligan the 1-0 non-conference victory.
On
the mound, Maegan Hambrick
(Lexington, Ky.) pitched three shut-out innings of relief out of the
Lady Buffs’ bullpen to improve her record to 8-5. She scattered
three hits and struck out one.
At
the plate for Milligan, Stewart was 1-for-4, but she provided the
game-winning RBI. Aldridge went 2-for-3 in the contest as well.
Lindsey Morgan provided a 3-for-3 performance at the plate for the
Lady Tornados.
The
Lady Buffs will travel to Maryville (Tenn.) College for their final
doubleheader of the season. The first game against the NCAA Division
III foe is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28. Milligan
swept both games of their doubleheader on March 22 at Anglin Field.
The Lady Buffs won 4-3 in the first contest and won another one-run
contest, 3-2, in the nightcap against Maryville.
