Milligan handles Bluefield in AAC softball action

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 21, 2007) --- The Milligan College Lady Buffs' softball team used an offensive explosion on Saturday afternoon to sweep Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) foe Bluefield (Va.) College at Anglin Field. In the first game, Milligan won 10-1 and completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory in the second contest. After the sweep, the Lady Buffs improve to 7-5 in conference play and 27-19 overall while Bluefield drops to 3-29 overall and 0-12 within the AAC.

Game 1 Milligan 10 Bluefield 1 (5 Innings)

With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Milligan's Leah Fritts (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Laken Stewart (Pennington Gap, Va.) delivered back-to-back singles. Megan Aldridge (Johnson City, Tenn.) followed with a three-run home run to put the first runs of the game on the scoreboard. Aldridge’s home run was her 13th of the season, which leads the team and AAC. The next batter, Jessica Blevins (Elizabethton, Tenn.), singled and advanced to second after Bluefield’s Allison Quesenberry threw a wild pitch. A 4-to-3 groundout off Leah White's (Gray, Tenn.) bat moved Blevins to third. Another wild pitch from Quesenberry allowed Blevins to score and make the score 4-0 after the opening inning.

The Lady Buffs went on to add two more runs in the second, third and fourth innings to go in front 10-0. Bluefield scored in fifth inning when Amber Harvey came home on a single from Amy Wilson to make the final score 10-1.

Blevins, Fritts and Holly Napier (Pennington Gap, Va.) each went 2-for-2. Blevins scored two runs, as did Jessica Russell (New Market, Tenn.) Aldridge finished the contest with one hit, her three-run home run.

On the mound, Jennifer Wise (Clermont, Fla.) pitched two perfect innings for the win.

Harvey finished 2-for-2 and scored the lone run of the game for Bluefield.

Game 2 Milligan 8 Bluefield 0 (6 Innings)

A RBI single from Aldridge scored Fritts to start a three-run first inning for Milligan in the second contest. Aldridge and Blevins also crossed home in the inning.

Milligan added four more runs in the second inning. The first run, Fritts, came home on a single from Blevins. After White singled and Mallory Tincher (Jacksonville, Fla.) drew a walk to load the bases, Napier drove in all three Lady Buffs with a single to push the Milligan lead to 7-0. 

A double from Blevins in the sixth inning allowed Stewart to score the final run in the contest. 

Blevins went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Fritts was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and White also accounted for two hits.

Wise (15-5) once again was the winning pitcher in the second contest. She allowed one hit and struck out two in two innings of work.

Aimee Street was 2-for-3 in the game for the Lady Rams.

Milligan will finish their portion of the AAC schedule on Sunday, April 22, with a doubleheader at conference-leader UVA-Wise. Their doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. UVA-Wise currently leads the AAC standings with their 9-3 record followed by Union (Ky.) College at 8-4 while Milligan and Virginia Intermont College share a 7-5 record.
