MILLIGAN
COLLEGE, TN (February 23, 2007) --- Both the Milligan College
Men’s and Women’s took wins over the Maryville College squads in
the first match at Milligan of the season on Friday afternoon.
Both squads earned the victories by scores of 8-1 over the
Maryville Scots.
The Buffaloes swept all the singles
matches against the Scots on the afternoon. Seniors Ryan
Reynolds (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Stuart Makinson
(Franklin, N.C.) won their singles matches, defeating Matt
Limone and Andrew Hazel respectively. Reynolds won with scores
of 6-0, 6-0, while Makinson won 7-6, 7-1, 6-1. Underclassman
Charles Williams (Perth, Australia) beat out William
Alexander, 6-3, 6-4, while teammate Jonathan Ryan (Wangaratta,
Australia)
took a
match 6-4, 6-4 over Maryville’s Yumihito Takebuchi. Tom Jones
(Johnson City, Tenn.) also claimed victory for the Buffs with a
6-0, 6-1 win over Brent Pesterfield, as did Bryan Upshaw
(Kingsport, Tenn.) with a score of 6-1, 6-1 over Reuben Liebe.
In men’s
doubles, the Milligan teams of Reynolds and Jones, along with
Ryan and Williams won with identical 8-1 scores.
For the
women, Milligan went undefeated in doubles action. The No. 1
pair of Melissa Grgat (Melbourne, Australia) and
Krissi Denton (Bristol, Tenn.) beat out Maryville’s Chelse
Nieri and Lauren Harper for an 8-5 win. Sara Hopson
(Greeneville, Tenn.) and Janie Mullins (Greenville, Ala.)
won their No. 2 doubles match with a score of 8-6 over Brittany
Sexton and Mary Catharine Moore. Amber Campbell (Erwin,
Tenn.) and Myra O’Dell (Kingsport, Tenn.) round out the
doubles sweep with an 8-0 victory over Meredith Howard and Megan
Walden.
Grgat took the No. 1 women’s
singles match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sexton. Denton followed
by defeating Harper 6-1, 6-1, as well as Campbell’s 6-7, 6-2
(10-4) victory over Moore. Freshman Mullins won over Megan
Walden 6-0, 6-3, and Mandy Caston (Moncks Corner, S.C.)
won 6-4, 6-2 over Meredith Howard.
The women’s
squad will return to action Saturday morning against Radford
University. Their match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the
Mathes Tennis Center. The men’s team will travel to Lee
University for a match on Feb. 27.
