Union snaps skid with 78-72 upset

From Union Sports Information

BARBOURVILLE, KY (January 9, 2007) --- Union College ended its longest losing streak in five years with a 78-72 upset over Milligan (Tenn.) College Tuesday in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

The Bulldogs (7-12 overall, 1-6 AAC) had not won since posting a 96-70 win over Kentucky Christian University on Nov. 30 as they dropped nine straight. The win prevented the skid from stretching to 10 games. During the 2001-02 season, Union dropped 16 in a row in going 6-25 on the year.

The victory also ended Union's conference drought as it improved to 1-6 in league play. Milligan dropped to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in conference action as its four-game win streak came to a halt.

Milligan jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but the Bulldogs fought back and trailed 10-6 with 15:38 to go in the half. The Bulldogs offense caught fire, embarking on a 17-4 run in seizing a 23-14 advantage at the 8:43 mark. Union's offense continued to cruise into the break as it took a 34-22 cushion into the half.

As the second half unfolded, it first appeared as if Union was going to run away with things as the lead swelled to 46-30 with 15:44 to go. However, the Buffaloes began to chip away at the deficit, ultimately cutting it to 63-59 when Jeff Barnes (Franklin, Tenn.) hit a bucket with 4:15 to play.

Aaron Dunaway scored four points during a 7-0 Union run as the margin went back to 10 (69-59) with 2:16 remaining. Milligan twice got the score within five points down the stretch but could no closer as Union held on for the 78-72 victory.

Dunaway led Union with 26 points and six rebounds, while Chris Stunson chipped in 16 points. David Vance helped out with 14 points.

For Milligan, Barnes' 26 points led the way with Tyler Estepp (Limestone, Tenn.) and Danny McKeehan (Morrow, Ohio) chipping in 14 and 11, respectively.

The Bulldogs hit 48.1 percent (26 of 54 shots) from the field but nailed 50 percent (nine of 18) from behind the arc. After shooting just 36.4 percent in the first half, Milligan finished the game connecting on 47.3 percent (26 of 55) from the floor. Yet, the Buffaloes were just three of 11 (27.3 percent) from long range.

Union hits the road Saturday for an AAC showdown against Bryan (Tenn.) College at 7:30 p.m. Milligan will return to action at NCAA Division II foe Brevard (N.C.) College Thursday night. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
