Milligan, UVA-Wise split baseball doubleheader

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 21, 2007) --- The Milligan College baseball team hosted UVA-Wise for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Anglin Field and the Buffs split with the visitors from Wise. UVA-Wise took the first game 4-2, but the Buffaloes bounced back for a 12-2 win in the second contest. After the split, Milligan improves to 11-5 within the AAC and 23-21 overall while UVA-Wise moves to 10-6 in conference and 25-12-1 overall.

A RBI single from John Bigley pushed home Edwin Narvaez to give UVA-Wise a 1-0 lead after the one inning. Another RBI single in the second inning gave UVA-Wise a 2-0 lead. Jorge Laboy singled which allowed Mike Lang to score. The Cavs extended their lead in the sixth inning when Brad Robbins doubled to drive in Bigley and the score was 3-0.

Milligan cut into the lead with a RBI single from senior Todd Sangid (Johnson City, Tenn.) in the bottom half of the sixth inning. His single allowed Justin Sauceman (Aloca, Tenn.) to score the Buffs’ first run of the game. Milligan struck again in the seventh inning when Baker DeCamp (Miami, Fla.) came home on a wild pitch.

With a 3-2 lead, UVA-Wise added another in the ninth inning with a RBI single from Andrew Anderson. His single drove in Robbins after his double to lead off the inning.

Senior Brett Seybert (Columbiana, Ohio) suffered the loss on the mound for the Buffs. Seybert (5-4) pitched 8 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Ricky Morgan (Elizabethton, Tenn.) went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Buffs.

UVA-Wise once again struck quickly with a RBI sacrifice fly from Bigley in the first inning of the second game. His sacrifice fly drove in Laboy.

Milligan jumped on the Cavs in their half of the first inning with a two-run inning followed by another two-run inning in the third. The Buffs put the game out of reach with six more runs in the fourth inning in which they sent 12 batters to the plate. The last two runs came home in the fifth inning to make the final score 12-2.

Nathan Fritz (Kingsport, Tenn.) pitched a complete game against UVA-Wise. Fritz (7-3) allowed two earned runs on three hits over the five-inning contest. He struck out five Cavs and walked one.

Sauceman scored four of Milligan’s 12 runs as he went 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles and a walk. Jonathan Ridenour (Alcoa, Tenn.) and Spencer Street (Jonesborough, Tenn.) each accounted for three RBIs while Cody Cannon (Elizabethton, Tenn.) drove in two more runs.

Milligan will host King (Tenn.) College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 24. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Anglin Field.
