PIKEVILLE, KY (February 23, 2007) --- The Milligan College
baseball team won over Pikeville (Ky.) College by a score of
3-0 on Friday behind a stellar complete game shutout from
freshman Frank Newcomb (Knoxville, Tenn.) in his
first collegiate start.
Newcomb scattered five hits, struck out six and walked only
one over the nine innings of work.
With a 0-0 tie going into the eighth inning, freshman
Danny Bacon (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led off with a walk.
Garrett Reed (Gray, Tenn.) then laid down a sacrifice
bunt, but reached base safely on an error by the first
baseman. With runners on the corners, Baker DeCamp’s
(Miami, Fla.) triple broke the game open and pushed the
score to 2-0. DeCamp then scored on a throwing error by the
Pikeville shortstop on Justin Sauceman’s (Alcoa,
Tenn.) ground ball.
Sauceman reached base safely four times in the game,
including a fourth inning double.
The win improves the Buffs to 2-5 on the season.
Milligan will travel to Pikeville again tomorrow, for a
doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
